i can't seem to find information about this anywhere about the ipaq.
what kind of interface is available for the ipaq out of the box?
meaning can i buy a CF modem or pc card modem to use with
it? or do they force me to buy that expansion pack jacket in order
for it to take one of those modem cards?

You need an expansion sleeve -- no built-in slots for storage or other
cards.
