Hi all, I hope someone is able to help. I cannot get WM5's ActiveSync to
start the Bluetooth sync, yet everything is paired and set up correctly:

On Windows Vista:
The PPC is paired by Bluetooth (had to switch from Toshiba to Windows stack)
It automatically assigned in/out ports to the PPC
Mobile Device Centre Bluetooth is ON

On Windows Mobile 5:
The device is paired to the PC
ActiveSync is ticked as a service for the PC

But when I go to the PPC and click Menu > Connect via Bluetooth it says:
"Cannot find an existing Bluetooth partnership with a PC that supports
ActiveSync. Would you like to set up a partnership now?"
Yes it is set up, and ActiveSync ticked!

I have tried this many times, cleared everything, rebooted, set it all up
again. No go.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

I have made a manual for setting up a bluetooth sync relation with Windows
Mobiles from Activesync
(http://modernnomads.info/wiki/index.php?page=Synchronizing+through+bluetooth).
Basically WMDV (Vista) and ActiveSync are the same product in a different
packaging, making the routes to settings different.

What I have noticed (and reported as a bug) is:
"that ONLY the first bluetooth port on the desktop will work due to a bug in
Windows Mobile/ActiveSync. Added Bluetooth Serial Ports will not be
recognized as providing an ActiveSync service."

Is this the case in your situation as well?

On second thought, does the WMDC-partnership between the device and PC
already exist? Because that does seem to be a prerequisite.

Hi, yes I set up the partership via USB first.

There are no other Bluetooth ports showing, just COM9 & 10 which the
Microsoft stack set up automatically.

Thing is WMDC doesn't let you choose a COM port so your guide really doesn't
work for Vista, as so many variables are different in Vista.

What I think is the problem is at the WM5 device:

>> But when I go to the PPC and click Menu > Connect via Bluetooth it says:
>> "Cannot find an existing Bluetooth partnership with a PC that supports
>> ActiveSync. Would you like to set up a partnership now?"

>> Yet it is set up, and ActiveSync ticked!

It does this without even seeming to communicate with the PC to 'look'
first.

Ideas?

lets take a look on the problem:
1.-my ppc (qtek 2020, windows mobile 2004, windows bt stack)) connect with
my pc (vista ultimate) over widcomm bt stack. that means no problem on both
bt stacks
2.-no connection on wmdc via bt, even configuring it to accept bluetooth
connections, but no problem via usb cradle. that means no problem with vista
firewall.
so, lets think about: when i connect ppc bt, some services appears on pc bt:
activesync, obex, voice gateway... But wmdc works over serial port. Resuming:
wmdc needs SERIAL PORT. ppc offers ACTIVESYNC. More problems: activesync
software allows to choice com port to connect bt to. wmdc not.
SOLUTIONS:
1.-as i ve read on the net: modify registry values , so we can tell wmdc
which com port must be used to connect bt. this com port must be the same one
assigned to activesync service when ppc is connected to pc bt stack. in my
case: COM5. So, a bit of regedit, look for HKLM\software\microsoft\windows ce
services\serial port, and change value, which is usually bluetooth, writting
COM5 instead (or whatever com port you have assigned to your activesync
service).
then save, close regedit and reboot pc. reconnect ppc and let bt stack add
new bt devices so we can reconfigure bt ppc services in order to:
2.-this is my finding: once ppc found, go to select which services we want
to use onn bt, select activesync and click over configuration. in the new
window, you can change the name of the service, that obviously is activesync
and put a new name: Serial Port. and voila!!!. open wmdc on pc, open
activesync on ppc, click on connect using bluetooth and youll see how
wonderfully wmdc connect with your ppc.

I really wish I understood you because that sounds promising, but I'm afraid
despite trying I can't quite work out what you mean.

Anyone able to help us translate this to a working 'how to' guide
specifically for Vista?

ok, cjsnet, ill try to explain the whole procedure again, and maybe it will
be useful as "how to".
remember that not all bluetooth stacks accept or offer all bluetooth
services. this procedure was made up using wdcomm 5 bt stack on pc(windows
vista ultimate) and ms bt stack on ppc (ms mobile 2003, se). if you use other
stacks, it may vary.

HOW TO CONNECT WMDC AND PPC ON VISTA

1.-run bt on your pc
2.-run bt on your ppc
3.-bond your pc and ppc via bt, that will require password on both devices
4.-once connected, your pc will show some services your ppc is offering:
activesync, voice gateway, obex, etc. and will allow you to configure some of
them. your pc assings by default one specific com port to activesync
service, that may vary depending on free com ports available on your pc. you
can see the assigned port clicking on configuration button. on the new
window, you can see COM PORT. for our purposes, lets suppose is COM5
5.-run wmdc software, modify connecions and mark on allow bluetooth
connection, which is not marked by default. close wmdc.
6.-old activesync program allows to choice com port to connect to. wmdc does
not. it must be set modifing windows vista registry. so, run regedit and look
for the key HKLM\software\microsoft\windows ce services\serial port. this
key has usually the value "bluetooth" (without quotes). well, modify it,
deleting bluetooth and writting COM5. (or any other com port your pc has
assigned to activesync). notice that we are modifing SERIAL PORT, that means
wmdc uses this service to connect.
7.-close regedit and reboot pc in order to allow changes in the registry.
8.-run again bt on both devices.
9.- run "add new bluetooth devices" on your pc. it will detect again your
ppc and services it provides, including activesync. configure again
activesync service, and check out com port is still the same as before. in
this configuration window, you will notice you can modify the NAME of the
service, that is "activesync" (without quotes). well, change it, and write
Serial Port.
10.-run again wmdc and it will connect to your ppc

resuming:
1.-activesync ppc service is connected to pc using COM5
2.-wmdc is forced to use serial port on COM5
3.-we change the name of activesync ppc service to serial port service, so
we can bypass the problem

Hi, I do appreciate your help, but your steps do not follow what the actual
devices allow or do. Do you have WM5 and Vista?

Ok

My PC (Vista) shows nothing of the sort. Can you clarify where the PC will
show these services? If I go into the properties on Vista for my WM5
device, all I see is "Dial-up networking (DUN) COM4" under Services.

On the PPC I see ActiveSync.

By clicking Properties > Services, but I only see DUN not ActiveSync.

No, sorry, I do not see Activesync in the list of services, either on the PC
or PPC. Before modding the registry, I did see ActiveSync JUST on the PPC.

I understand the pricinple now thanks, but it just doesn't work, in fact it
makes matters worse by removing the ActiveSync service from the PPC list.

I hope someone from MS is watching and making this nightmare process simpler
for the next release!

Jaap,

It appears your manual is for XP not Vista. Part of the problem is VISTA is
not setting up an ActiveSync Bluetooth connection just a standard connection.
The Vista Bluetooth stack seems to be the problem for me. There is NO
services tab on the Vista Bluetooth Devices dialog.

Do you have a differant manual for Vista?

Thanks,

Are you using the Vista BT stack, or a 3rd party stack? I know Toshiba
provides a stack that has trouble with ActiveSync.

Try deleting the paring on the desktop and device, then establish it from
the device instead of the desktop. ActiveSync should be an available
service at the end of pairing on the device.

All as detailed above really. I can pair the devices, and can see

I'm having the same issue and can't seem to get around it by establishing the
pair from the device. I have a Sony Vaio with the Toshiba BT stack (whatever
that means) and I can't seem to defeat it or get the pair to use the Vista BT
stack instead. When I try to pair from the phone, the Toshiba BT mgmt
software makes the pair and I don't see Activesync as a service on the phone.
When I exit the Toshiba BT software first and try again to force it to use
the Vista BT instead, the phone can't discover the computer. When I go into
the Control Panel and look under BT devices, it won't let me make the Sony
discoverable and the BT connection wizard says my BT adapter must not be
attached to my computer. So is the Sony stuck with the Toshibia stack and am
I stuck without BT sync?

I've been having exactly the same problem, my WM5 PPC will not link to my
Vista laptop via Bluetooth - or at least it will not connect ActiveSync to
WMDC. It seems that the M$ Vista developers didn't talk to the M$ WM5
developers, or test their software sufficiently.

As my PPC will connect happily via cable, I solved the problem by buying a
second USB sync cable for my Dell Axim so I can leave the original cradle
connected to my desktop PC.

Only £16 as life's too short to cope with all the hassle!

Alright....check this *(&(*#$%& out. I am having the exact same problems as
discribed in this post. I have read this whole post and many others like it;
discussions about registry changes, BT radio stacks, etc. etc. But after much
soul searching and much "well, click this and see what happens", this is what
I found out.

If I uncheck the "Active Sync" service on my phone and then choose "Connect
Via Bluetooth".

BAM

Connected and syncing. Go figure. <smile> <head shake>

I don't know if this will work for you guys or anyone else that looks here,
but it worked for me.

Sure,

Open 'Comm Manager'
Choose "Settings" (bottom right)
Choose "Bluetooth Settings"

Under the 'Devices' tab
Press and Hold on the PC you have the Active Sync (WMDC) partnership setup
This should bring up a short drop down.

Choose 'Edit'

The services associated with that devices should be listed and Active Sync
should be one of them.

Uncheck <ActiveSync>

Choose 'Save'

'OK' out of the Bluetooth Settings

=============================================

Open the "Active Sync" application

Choose 'Menu'

Choose 'Connect via Bluetooth'

When I did this my Windows Mobile Device Center jumped to life and allowed
me to sync right away.

Right at the moment I am having a bit of a struggle because my
Email/Contacts and Calendar are synced with our Exchange Server at work while
my files and media are synced with my PC. WMDC keeps forcing me to sync with
only my PC. That is frustrating.

Good Luck!

On June 24, Nostromos wrote a step-by-step for getting Activesync and
Vista to actually work. I have an iPAQ 1945. I finally got it to
sync with his instructions. It never showed activesync as a service.
I went into the Registry and made the modification. I rebooted and re-
paired the two machines. Then I went into the iPAQ bluetooth manager
and made a new connection. This time when I chose activesync, it
found the service and made a connection.

I am also having this problem with COM ports with Vista x64, WMDM 6.1 and my

My general opinion of MS having us mess about with the registry aside, the

You're just teasing me. I was excited this might have been a solution. But on

Ok, my turn to chime in. I have the EXACT same problem as CJSnet. I wish
someone from MS would actually read this and offer some sort of help.

WMDC 6.1 on an HP dv9610us laptop
WM5 on a Treo 700WX /Verizon

I have an active pairing and have set up and used a USB sync. I can use
Bluetooth to beam files back and forth so I know at least some of Bluetooth
works.

What ticks me off is the absolute lack of Bluetooth support. Other than
marketing fluff, there is not one shred of information on how to actually
make it work or diagnose a problem. The seems to be an implicit trust that it
just 'works'. But just how do you make it actually do that?

The comm port on the WM Device and the one on the PC have nothing to do with
each other. Each side's BT connection is presented as a comm (serial) port
to be used by the associated program, in this case ActiveSync or WMDC.

But how the heck do you make it work then? I really don't care if it's a bug

Unfortunately it is a hard problem because of all the different variations
in implementing BT. Actually the UI into BT. I recently came into a MS
branded BT dongle, stuck that onto my Vista machine (which detected it and
loaded drivers, native Vista drivers), grabbed a WM device which was already
paired with that machine, opened AS on the device, and clicked Connect via
BT, and it just did it. By no means am I suggesting that is how it always
works. It is how it should work though. With various different BT stacks on
the devices, and different UIs for them and the same on the PC side, you
would need to provide exactly what you are dealing with and hope someone
with the same setup has made it work, and remembers how. When providing that
info, be specific. HTC Wizard is not the same as iMate, K-Jam, T-Mobile MDA
or AT&T 8125, in this case. Indicate what you have. Each variation can have
differences on how control panels are laid out. Just as important on the PC
side, though that side is more important to know what software is being
used. You can use most BT dongles with the drivers that come with XP or
Vista, but you loose a lot. If you are using a Belkin dongle and the
software that came with it, or a downloaded some Blue Soleil stuff from the
web, say so.

Not saying I can help, but if you define the problem clearly, more than "I
have a PPC and can't get BT sync to work, tried everything, please help,"
maybe someone can. I've been pretty successful getting it to work in the
past, but honestly I don't bother with it as a rule. I generally have a
cradle or cable hooked to my PC and when I am close to it the WM Device gets
connected to sync and charge. I'm generally don't get the urge to sync when
I'm within 20-30 ft of the PC, without also wanting to charge.

Typically though, it is a matter of setting one side or the other as
discoverable, and then having the other discover it. Once the two items know
about each other you go into one or the other and check for services.
Hopefully serial is one of them. Then on the PC in the BT control panel you
set a serial port to be emulated via BT, and AS or WMDC to use that serial
port. You may need to do a similar thing on the PPC. In the BT settings,
set up a comm port, and set AS to use it. This may be a matter of just
selecting Connect Via BT.

The reason they don't need to be the same, is that they only mean anything
on the one device. The PPC uses a serial profile on a virtual comm port to
send data over BT, which is received by the PC over BT with a serial profile
and presented to AS via a virtual comm port. If you think about it, and you
are old enough, when you hooked two PCs together with a serial cable, it
didn't need to be the same comm port on both ends. You just needed to tell
the Terminal program which comm port to use at each end. and make sure the
wire was connected to the right port at each end. BT is the wire.

I have an HP DV9610US laptop using whatever stack it comes with. Looking at
the drivers they indicate MS, but I may not necessarily be looking at the all
the right places. The only other software loaded is MS Office.

The BT device is a Treo 700WX from Verizon. Using whatever came on it.

I have found that pairing is hit and miss. With all the
problems/troubleshooting, I have deleted and re-paired a number of times. I
have initiated pairing from the BT device and also the laptop. Sometimes it
works the same, sometimes not. Sometimes it finds the Activesync service,
sometimes not.

On the BT device it tells me the laptop provides the Activesync service. On
the laptop it says the Treo provides DUN on COM4.

Just like CJSnet I can beam files back and forth without issues. But when I
try to sync from the BT device and click 'Connect with BT', it say it 'can't
find a partnership with a device that supports Activesync...Do I want to set
one up?' Looking in the BT console on the device it does indicate the
Activesync service is checked. I have bothe checked and unchecked this
service as one used indicated on his device that fixed his problem. I have
not found a way to initiate a sync from the laptop since it never thinks
there is anything connected. The BT connection state indicator on the device
confirms this. It only indicates a connection when service information is
beign requested or files are being beamed, otherwise it indicates there is no
connection.

Whenever I initiate a pairing it connects, then immediately disconnects. I
have previously posted on this situation, but have not recieved any repsonse
to it.

I have tested the device with a BT headset and the BT connection remains on
and functional/stable. In troubleshooting the BT connection, I have done all
Palm has recommended. Such as not having any other pairings active at the
time and not being in any application that might intereferem such as the
camera. As far as I can tell Activesync is the only non-functional
application of BT.

Activesync works fine via USB so that part seems to be working.

I have posted on the Palm site, and all the related non-Palm sites with no
repsonse. From all the posts I've seen this is a very common problem and non
of the peopple I have found have gotten any repsonse from their device
supplier or anyone to get this resolved. I have also contacted HP and to date
they do not have any clue as to what is happening or how to fix it. I am
trying to get it escalated through their support structure currently.

Unfortunately I don't have an HP laptop with BT, though it sounds a bit like
it is just using the MS stack, which should work. I have no familiarity with
Palm's BT implementation. I will tell you one important piece of info
though, you CANNOT initiate BT sync from the laptop/desktop, it must start
at the Treo (or any other WM device) using the Connect via BT in AS, so
don't bother trying. Once things are set right the process is that the
device pops up the comm port and BT connection, is felt at the PC and
AS/WMDC is listening on that particular comm port and connects. I would love
it to work like most headsets, that when the partnered phone and headset are
on, and close, they just pair, but it doesn't.

DUN (dial up networking) is not the profile you want to be using BTW. That
is a feature designed for your laptop to use the internet via a pass through
to your Mobile's data plan.

Good luck, hope someone here can help. You might start a new thread with
'Treo 700w/HP DV9610US laptop BT sync problem' as the title. Might have less
diluted responses.

On my XP PC (with an el cheapo D-Link BT dongle) I had to manually assign a
COM port to my BT device, then manually tell Activesync to use the COM port
I assigned to the BT dongle. THEN I could pair the WinMo device (from the
device- not the PC) and have it discover the Activesync service.

I'm not sure any of this applies to your situation, but it might be
applicable at least to the general idea that BT, while useful when working,
still isn't "plug n' play."

That's correct- each device finds what it can "use" from the other- sync
via BT has to be initiated from the WM device, so it "sees" the PC as
something to sync to (as having an "Activesync service.") The PC doesn't
see the WM device as anything but a cellular modem, so it sees a "DUN"
device.

Can you manually assign the PC's BT COM port in WMDC? Due to some problem
I've never tracked down, Activesync seems to "fire up" on my PC's bootup
before my dongle's driver does, so I get an error message saying the AS COM
port isn't available and I have to disable it for AS to load. By then, the
dongle lights up and I can immediately re-enable the COM port (in my case,
COM4.)

Best of luck. I wish I had better advice than "BT is just flakey that
way..."

If your only/primary use of BT on this laptop is for AS, you might try
removing the BT hardware in Device Manager, then reinstalling it with the
Add New Hardware function, hoping it loads generic MS BT drivers instead of
HP's. They seem to be more "sync friendly," but as Sven said, they
supposedly lack some BT functionality, but seem to work fine for synching
and BT headset (for VoIP) use- the only things I need BT on my PC for.

I have a Dell Axim X50 and a Toshiba M205 TabletPC. I have exactly the
same problem. No services are listed but a COM port. When I look into
the registry, there's no such entry as "bluetooth" that I can change
to a specific COM port.

If anoyne finds a way, please let me know.

Oh, I also have the problem that even if I connect with a USB cable, I
cannot reach internet. The sync works, but when I launch IE on the
Pocket PC and try going to a web site, I get an error. Any suggestions
to fix this?

Thanks.
