Howdy,

I recently purchased a new PDA Phone (HTC T4242) and I have been trying to
activate Microsoft Reader and have hit a snag. After several attempts,
including a hard reset I haven't been able to get Microsoft Reader to detect
the activation files.

I am prompted to install secrep.cab in the PDA Phone and the secrep.dat,
secrep.dll, secrep.xml, secrepid.dat files are installed to the \Windows
directory. However it appears that the "Microsoft Activation.unload" file
is missing.

Attempting to open a DRM'ed ebook causes the reader to get stuck in a loop,
creating "Microsoft Activation.unload" zero byte file causes Microsoft
Reader to crash. That isn't to much of a surprise, I was originally
Microsoft Reader just checked to see if it existed and would use secrep.dll
to unencrypted the DRMed ebooks.

All of this assumes this and other posts are accurate:

Anybody have any ideas?

I have never managed to get Reader activated on any of my WM5 or WM6
devices. I eventually gave up and used ConvertLit (http://convertlit.com/)
to strip the DRM off of my eBooks. (Before anyone gets upset, ConvertLit,
while probably illegal in the USA by the "letter of the law," conforms to
the "spirit of the law." It can only strip the DRM off of eBooks registered
to _your_ account, by using the license on your activated PC. It can't
willy-nilly break Reader's encryption of any book. I liken it to burning a
DRM'd iTunes song you purchased to a CD in order to rip it to WMA to also
play on your Zune. It's just a tool. Properly conforming to copyright
fair-use principles by not sharing the unencrypted copy is now up to you.)

Once stripped, the books will open on an unactivated/not properly activated
copy of reader, solving your problem.

When I use ConvertLit I've noticed that it screws with the formatting on my
books and makes my Table of Contents useless.

I think I've figured out a decent solution to all this, for me at least, not
for others.

Since I haven't heard back from the reader team on a test build for WM6.1
and 6.5 is already around the corner (which will render this fix useless)
I'm just going to buy a Kindle.

Books backed up and formatted in a much nicer format than Reader...and
unlike PDA's or Phones that have unreadable screens in the daylight I can
read this outside.

This gives me more of a reason to sit at the park and read.

I never noticed any formatting issues using ConvertLit, as long as I didn't
convert to a different format (i.e. Word or .txt) and convert back to
Reader. As long as I stayed with Lit files everything seemed fine.

I'll conceed the PocketPC phone isn't the best reading platform, but it's
always with me, and is "free" (since I already own it!)

I'm actually hoping Amazon comes up with a Windows Mobile Kindle client like
they did for the iPhone to give WinMo access to the Kindle library.

I fear Reader is end-of-life, at least for WinMo, which is too bad- it was a
nice eBook reader.

Indeed...I've been using it since it first debuted back in August 2000. The
free argument has always been my 'value proposition' when it comes to Reader
as well. It was a free app for the PC, and with my PPC Phone it was a free
app there too and the books were cheap.

However the inability to read outside always bothered me, but not a ton.

The inability to activate and use content I've paid for because MS is being
slow on the draw for updating however, not my problem.

I've spent hundreds on books for this platform, and to have a new version of
Windows Mobile come out, that's a 'minor revision' by the point count, and
destroy my ability to use the product is ridiculous
