I had Microsoft Office XP Professional 2002 installed on my computer. I
downloaded the Microsoft Office Professional 2007 Trial. When the trial
expired, I went to the Control Panel to Add/Remove Programs to uninstall the
trial in order to stop getting expiration messages whenever I opened a
Microsoft Office program. After properly uninstalling the 2007 trial, I
restarted my computer as asked. When my computer rebooted, I could not
access any saved Microsoft Office documents (even documents created using the
2002 version). When trying to access these documents, a Windows Installer
window would pop up and say “Preparing to install.” This window will do
nothing and eventually go away.

Thinking to fix the problem, I tried uninstalling my Microsoft Office XP
Professional 2002 so that I could reinstall it with my disk. When I go to
the Control Panel to Add/Remove Programs and select Microsoft Office XP
Professional, I click Remove and the following message comes up:

"This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package
exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to
verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package."

Since I could not get the program uninstalled, I tried inserting my
Microsoft Office XP Professional 2002 disk to either repair the program or
reinstall it; I get the same message as above.

I have tried everything other than doing a system recovery. Any help on
this issue would be appreciated. Thank you.
