Step 2: The gmapprom.img and gmap3d.img files should be manually unlocked before they go into the car using gimgunlock.exe. (See links at bottom for garmin image tools) To unlock the two files, simply drag-and-drop them one at a time onto the "gimgunlock.exe" file using your file explorer. It will only take a couple of seconds to unlock both files. A command window will flash by, so fast you may miss it if you blink.

Step 3: Downgrade radio navigation to CTP13! This is very important as newer versions have secuirty that prevents loading of maps without dealer codes. Take a second USB drive with the gupdate.gcd from CTP13. The one I found was not for a dodge journey, however it still worked. Turn on the car and hold temp up + temp down + front defrost, after a few seconds dealer mode will pop up. Select garmin recovery update and plug in the usb drive with CTP13 on it. NOTE: After you flash this it takes a long time to load. Let it load and it will still say cannot unlock maps. Just click ok, you may need to restart your car one time to click out of the pop up.

I have a Dodge Journey 2014. I was in Florida on vacation when all of my maps locked up. It now states "Cannot unlock maps". I am going to try this method over the weekend and hopefully it works! I am not very technically savvy, so I am hoping for the best. Thanks for the idea and info!!

There is no legal means to transfer the maps. Where did you get the replacement? If you got it from Garmin they would have unlocked the map so you could load it on your new GPS. Otherwise your basically without a paddle.



Today, Garmin devices have a usability problem. One factor is the slow UI and dependence on physical buttons. But the bigger usability problem is self inflicted. Back in 2014, instead of improving their devices to allow users to load raster maps, they added a subscription model and map authentication to continuously extract money from users.

Any idea if Garmin is planning on updating their integration with OSM in the web version of Connect? The current implementation is horrible. No contour lines, missing road names for secondary and fire roads, blocky trails. Just terrible. Looking at connect.garmin.com and openstreetmap.org side by side in a browser is night and day. The maps on the edge device actually look better than the maps in Connect!

Sadly the garmin openstreetmap nl website isnt properly working anymore. It is only possible to download the entire map of a country and therefore it is no longer useable with my 520 edge. Do you know of any other way to create maps of selected areas only?

Im doing the LA tri in may this year (2020 trip over from the UK in 2020 postponed for obvious reasons!)
Am I correct in the assumption that my garmin 830, which has uk and europeans maps installed, will require USA/california maps to function properly?

I bought a Garmin Nuvi 52LM in 2014 (have tried a later model but had to send it back with a faulty power button and so stayed with the old faithful) when I started van driving, and could not update maps as I was not a windows user. A friend updated the maps on his windows laptop for me and it took about 4 hours with the Garmin Express programme. What a pain and then I found out about OSM - downloaded the map, installed it on an sd-card, took about 30 mins and little hassle. The procedure below will not over write any orignal Garmin data/operating system - as you are only putting a map on the sd-card which the device kindly reads FIRST and loads before looking at the maps on the device. You could put several countries maps on the sd-card (but rename the different maps - I just leave mine as it is gmapsupp.img as I have only used the UK map. You can add POI but I don't bother. For multi-drop I find the Garmin excellent with the 2D plan view selected rather than 3D as it is useful to look at the surrounding road names... but I have the truck satnav app on the phone for route planning, bridges and weight limits.

- take the micro sd-card in the adaptor and format it in the card reader on the PC to FAT32. Afterwards create a directory 'garmin' - in lower case (because the maps on the device are stored in 'Garmin') and you want the device to load the sd-card map. I use an older sd-card that's only 4gb but if you are buying new you'll probably have to have a larger 32gb+ as that's all that's available now. Even if new I'd recommend formatting to check for errors.
