Hi,

I'm trying to run a nested installation in my msi via custom action type 7.
We created the nested installation, the main installer contains are primary
programs,
the stored install contains only the crystal reports merge modules due to it
taking a huge
amount of time to install. Upon installing the new nested installer on a
computer
previously installed with the non-nested installer, we getthe following
error:

MSI (s) (68:80) [15:27:52:421]: Product Code from property table after
transforms: '{4833BFA5-F224-48A2-B774-0043FA2FAD71}'
This action is only valid for products that are currently installed.
:CRMerge.msi
MSI (s) (68:1C) [15:27:52:437]: Note: 1: 1713 2: VIP 3.13.6 3: 1605
DEBUG: Error 2835: The control ErrorIcon was not found on dialog

Error 1713. VIP 3.13.6 cannot install one of its required products. Contact
your technical support group. System Error: 1605.
MSI (s) (68:1C) [15:28:12:328]: Product: VIP 3.13.6 -- Error 1713. VIP
3.13.6 cannot install one of its required products. Contact your technical
support group. System Error: 1605.

I subsequently tried installing only the crystal installer, and got past the
error. However, now we can
not uninstall the crystal reports with either the nested installer or the
non-nested installer (add/remove
programs does not work).

Can anyone offer suggestions on how to get past the error 1713?

Thanks,
Dave

Microsoft knows about this problem. Nested installer is problem by design.

Hi Dave,

I have searched the Internet and found a good KB article discussing about
how to create a nested installation. I think it will be helpful to you.

'HowTo: Create a Nested Installation'
http://support.installshield.com/kb/view.asp?articleid=Q105706

FYI, the Windows Installer Error 1713 is a rather generic error, but if
encountered during the attempted removal (or reinstallation) of a program,
make use of the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to fully remove the
original installation.

To get the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, you may visit the following
link.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,
Linda Liu

If you install an MSI with a nested installation you can uninstall it only
by doing a nested uninstall, a type 39 custom action in the same setup as
the type 7. The interesting question is therefore whether your original
nested install with the type 7 CA also has a type 39 CA to uninstall it. If
it does, your new product install can do a major upgrade of the older
version, and that will uninstall the parent MSI and its nested MSI with the
type 39.
