What about Windows Installer 2.0?

Have anyone heard anything about the plans for Windows Installer 2.0? Since
Windows XP is RTM now perhaps Windows Installer 2.0 is not too far away?

On the Platform SDK redist page
(http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/platformsdk/sdkupdate/) there is a
version called 1.50.2421.1. From what I have heard, there will never be a
version 1.5 of Windows Installer. The next version is 2.0. I have also heard
that there are several problems with the 1.50.2421.1 beta.

In Visual Studio .Net 7.0 beta 2 there is a beta version of 2.0: InstMsi
12.0.2475.0. How well does that version work? What is new?

Will there be another beta version of Windows Installer before the release?

In order to create installation programs for Windows XP that uses features
like signed installations you need to use a later version of Windows
Installer than 1.1. Since Windows XP is now RTM we would like to make sure
our programs are ready by the time Windows XP is released (October 25).

The Platform SDK page
(http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/platformsdk/sdkupdate/) already
has the information for the release version of MSI 2.0. It also
includes tools like Orca (version 2.0.2600.0). Only the
redistributables are missing. I'd like to know when these are
available, too.

configuration service. Instmsi.exe is the redistributable package for
installing or upgrading Windows Installer.
Version - 2.0
Release Date - 28 Aug 2001
Estimated Download Size/Time @28.8 - 1,779 kb / 9min
System Requirements

Windows Installer 2.0 Unicode (NT\Win2K) redistributable supports Windows
NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6 or later and Windows 2000. Windows XP contains
Windows Installer 2.0 and therefore can't be installed by the
residtributable.

For Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows ME see "Windows Installer ANSI
(Win9X) redistributable", version 2.0

Operating System - Windows NT 4.0 & 2000

Is there way to simple download SDK and don't install it from the MS site?

You can download the complete platform sdk (use Full Download option).
When installing online you can select to install just´the Windows
Instaler SDK not the other parts of the PSDK.

What OSs does the platform sdk run on? 98? NT? or just W2k?

I don't know of any restrictions, except for the online installation
tool: "SDK Update v1.0 does not install on the Win 95 OS, but does
install on the Win 98 SE OS and the Win Me OS. - Installations on the
Win9x OS are not supported by Microsoft Product Support." (quote from
the PSDK web site)
