I just spotted some info about Windows Installer Version 3.1 in the online
MSDN documentation. Located at this link:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/msi/setup/what_s_new_in_windows_installer_version_3_1.asp

To me it looks like a small upgrade/fix to version 3.0. Only new function
documented is MsiSetExternalUIRecord. But I can't find any more information
about it. Our department is soon going to test deployment of SP2 / Windows
XP. And if version 3.1 of Installer is available, I would like to include it.

So does anyone now anything:
- Is version 3.1 finished ?
- Is a standalone upgrade/install file for it available ?
- Will it only be available over Windows Update ?
- Is it a fix or are there serious new features in it ?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

As far as I know MSI 3.1 will be part of the Windows Server 2003 SP1, and
apparently will be released as redistributable for Windows 2000 SP3, XP and
2003. Since the MSI 3.0 redist is not yet available (MSI 3.0 is currently
only available in XP SP2) I guess you will have to wait a while for MSI 3.1.

Thanks for the quick answer. Tells me most of what I needed to know.

For my own curiosity I tried SP1build1247 for Server 2003. There Windows
Installer is listed as 3.01.4000. So I guess 3.1 / 3.01 may be the 'same'
version. Anyway, we'll get the final answer when it's released.

Leading zeros don't count, so 3.01 = 3.1
