On a PC that has Windows vista in Spanish I see C:\Program Files from
the command prompt and C:\Archivos de Programa from a Windows
explorer. The same goes for Usuarios (Users) folder.
In the DOS command window I see Program files and Users instead, and
in Explorer I see the Spanish equivalent names.

So on Windows Vista OS that shows "Archivos de programa" in the
Explorer, but the same Spanish Vista OS shows "Program files" in the
DOS window and ALSO in the Title Bar of the Windows Explorer. If the
user wants to paste the path (CTRL-C) from Windows Explorer he/she
will paste C:\program files not C:\ Archivos de programa.
In VISTA Windows Explorer the path is not representative of what is
actually on the drive of the target Spanish PC.

These particular findings are straight from the Spanish VISTA OS.

This is very confusing when installing English products on a Spanish
VISTA machine.
The selection’s path is representative of what is on the drive of the
target PC if the user installs an English version of a product, but
when opening Windows Explorer the path is not representative of what
is on the drive of the target PC.

It is this way for all the (Microsoft) products I tried.

For example when installing the original English release on Vista
Spanish the default installation path displays as: C:\Program files
\The_Product_Name AND it installs in C:\Program files\The_Product_Name
BUT in Windows Explorer is shows like C:\Archivos de programa
\The_Product_Name

I am localizing products in multiple languages (French, Spanish,
German, Japanese, Czech, Chinese, Russian…) the following findings
were discovered on Spanish. In French the problem does not seem as bad
because French and Japanese OS do not translate Program Files. In the
other hand German does...

Anyone has a idea about that?

Is your program using the Shell namespace functions to figure out where to
put things?

Thank you MichKa, but using the Shell namespace functions to figure
out where to put things will not help when installing a product like
Microsoft Office 2003 on a VISTA Spanish. This is very confusing!

The Windows Explorer path shown is not representative of what is on
the drive!

Windows Vista OS shows "Archivos de programa" in the Explorer, but the
same Spanish Vista OS shows "Program files" at the DOS window and ALSO

in the Title Bar of the Windows Explorer.

If the user wants to cut-n-paste the path (CTRL-C) from Windows
Explorer he/she
will paste C:\program files not C:\ Archivos de programa as it is
shown in the Windows Explorer.

Is there a way to have the Windows Explorer show the existing
collection of folders not the translated names of these folders?

Actually, they will help if they are used properly. They will tell your code
a path you can use to install things properly, and to put things wher you
want them.
