Cut out by color

I can get the photo covered in the opposite color to do a cut out but
there is no way I can see to get the background removed. I have tried
hitting return, escaped, shift and a host of other keys on my computer
because the "finish" button usually is greyed out. When it is not
greyed out and I can click it, the picture just reverts back to its
original form
Suggestions?
