Microsoft has silently released an update for Microsoft PhotoDraw 2000 2.0.
Indeed the build number of PhotoDraw 2000 2.0 that comes with the new Office
2000 Premium SR1 kits is 2.0.0.1129 while the retail version of PhotoDraw
2000 2.0 still carries the build number 2.0.0.915 which is obviously more
older. Unfortunately Microsoft didn't release yet a patch to update
PhotoDraw 2000 2.0 so there's no way to get the latest build except buying
Microsoft Office 2000 SR1 Premium.

Sigh. Well they didn't widely broadcast the release version differences
but it was documented in the KB and I've included mention of the Photodraw 2000 SR1
version here in a number of postings about versions :)
The version in Office 2000 Premium is Photodraw 2000 v2 SR1. There were several
months between the time Photodraw 2000 v2 was on the street and when
the Office 2000 SR1 Premium CDs with Photodraw 2000 v2 were on the street.
The May 2000 KB article on the differences is below. PhD 2000 v2 SR1 is not available
separately as a download but for most folks, as you can see by the KB article content
it likely won't affect many folks who do not have Office 2000 Premium SR1 with
Photodraw 2000 v2 SR1 included and the other KB articles referenced should be
reviewed if one of the buglets happens to be run into.

That article seems to be a 404 these days. Wonder why?
And why can't MS make a patch file available for download????

Well, not to get back into the issue of what version is available <g>, because
yes, if there had been a change in the behavior of the program relative
to fewer fuzzies it would have most definitely been (1) available to everyone,
somehow, <g> and (2) *widely* talked about here and probably cheered if
it worked :)
The newest MS graphics app that uses some of the same stuff under the
hood is MS PictureIt!2001 (Sep2000). Looking over the PI newsgroup
the reports are from 'no improvement' to 'some improvement' to 'not a problem' with
the blurred issues, so it's hard to tell what's happening for sure as far as
progress on defuzzing.
Actually the MS KB article you mentioned is one of my favorites if only
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q248/5/85.ASP
because it lists MS Image Composer (a favorite tool of a number of folks who
frequent this newsgroup) as a workaround to MS Photodraw for this problem <g>
It isn't just MS's Photodraw that looks for DPI/PPI resolution information within
a graphic, it's a variety of MS Office products. In Photodraw you get one
treatment when you use File=>Open and another may occur when you
use Insert=>Picture (right Bill? <g>) Take a look in Irfanview, for example,
http://www.irfanview.com at the File information screen when you open a
graphic to see if it declares a DPI setting for a particular graphic.
A bitmap, for example, a screenshot saved from MS PhotoEditor and
MS Photodraw both have settings to select the DPI to use when
saving a file, but their pictures don't show that in IrfanView's file
information, but if you paste and save the BMP in MS Windows Paint
the File info does list 96dpi and then the Office apps use that (and there
are some permutations on being able to see what to expect, etc, but
yes, it's a surprise to most folks on what happens).
Another question is when you look at the Zoom percentage dropdown
what is it a percentage of? It's partly related to the visible display
area on the screen and the Pan & Zoom window, but I've not seen a
definitive explanation of it as just when it seems to have an explanation
you try a different switch and it stops making sense again. Yes size
of the picture or even the selected would be what I would have liked/(expected?).
The blurry/fuzzies are indeed frustrating and MS's KB articles that some of
(smoothing) is intentional, and not optional is equally frustrating.
FWIW, there was a rumour blurb this week on Photodraw's possible
future incarnations in a newsletter this week.

And that "silent" patch does not even solve the big problem of resolution in
PhotoDraw : you have a GIF or JPEG image of 200 x 100 pixels, for instance,
and, when imported or inserted in PhotoDraw, you get 100 x 50 pixels
instead. You resize the image to its original dimensions (200 x 100) and
what you get is a blurred image. So much fun with MS products !
Article ID Q248585 does NOT the issue. Just silly workarounds.
