Does anybody know of a software which can convert postscript images (*.eps)
to jpeg or other format for web use?

John:

PaintShop Pro 6 is one program that can do this.

IrfanView can do it too. You can download it free at
http://www.irfanvew.com. See the recent post from Bryce, "Irfanview 3.20
released" (7/13/2000), which includes a certain amount of information on
IrfanView.

Not sure about this, but I believe that IrFanView only extracts the
preview, so it the preview is of poor quality (as is often the case), any
web graphics produced from it will also be poor... GhostScript on the other
hand is able to render the full-res EPS (as well as add/change preview) and
export it to other vector formats such as WMF or raster formats such as BMP
or TIF.

Hi John,

What results did you have in opening the EPS file in Photodraw 2000 v2
and saving it as a JPEG?

Hello Bob:

Because PhotoDraw offers only a small number of save-export formats (8
besides the MIXs), some of us may have lost sight of the fact that it can
OPEN a much larger variety of formats including EPS. I found a couple of
EPSs among my graphics files and opened them in PD. Since they were
grayscale (aren't all EPSs grayscale?) I saved them as GIFs. Comparing each
GIF with its EPS version, I found the visual qualities to be almost
identical (to my eyes) and the file sizes very similar.

No, EPS is the most reliable graphic format for color info, and can contain
both vector & bitmap information.

It's not crazy rough, really. First you download and install the
GhostScript engine from
ftp://ftp.cs.wisc.edu/ghost/aladdin/gs601/gs601w32.exe and then you download
and install the GS Viewer from
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview/index.html (I still prefer the older
version 2.9 available from
ftp://ftp.cs.wisc.edu/ghost/ghostgum/old/gsv29w32.exe) Now you're setup.
If during install you chose to associate GS View with PS and EPS files,
simply double-clicking and EPS will open it in GSView, then you manually
specify the image's size in the "Media" menu, and select "Edit>Convert to
Vector format" to export to WMF, or "File>Print" to export to BMP or TIF
format (hint: print to file and "device"=bmp16m will output a nice bitmap
for you at the resolution you specify).

I may have found an easier softer way.

Star Office 5.1 can create, import, and export EPS through its Star Draw
(vector graphics) and Star Image (raster graphics) modules. The program is a
free download at www.sun.com/staroffice. However, I spent $10 for the CD and
I am glad I did. It contains a few extra goodies and avoids the 60 MB
download.

I just (this evening) conducted tests, creating, exporting, and importing
many formats including both EPS color and EPS grayscale. The GIF and the EPS
grayscale images had problems with transparency, but all other formats (BMP,
EPS color, JPG, PNG, TIFF, and WMF) worked great both ways.

As a bonus, Star Draw can do cool 3D stuff.

Other than being able to open and save most graphics formats, Star Image is
pretty boring--about like Microsoft Photo Editor.

I used version 5.1, but 5.2 is now available.

Hope this helps.
