I'm not familiar with that program, so I couldn't say if it was done
correctly, but this article may well apply in your situation.

Sorry, I meant I backed backed up all files and data (all Documents and
Settings folders) with Windows XP back-up wizard.

By emails appear empty, I mean there are emails in inbox and sent mail, but
when I try to open them (or preview them) they are all blank.

Your link does ot seem relevant as it refers to upgrading not re-installing
- thanks anyway.

Try highlighting a message in the list, then press Ctrl+F3. Can you now
read the contents? If so, close Outlook Express and try the following:

Go to Start | Run and type
regsvr32 inetcomm.dll

Press the OK button, then reopen Outlook Express and test if fixed.

Some antivirus products (or antispam products) can also be the cause if
email scanning by them is enabled.

Jim,

Thanks for the advice:

OK - Ctrl-F3 displays the message body OK, after the header etc "blurb"

However, after running regsvr32 inetcomm.dll (with result message
"successfull"), emails still appear empty on re-starting OE.

I have also tried temporarily disabling my virus checker with no joy.

I should mention that after re-installing XP and restoring data, I had two
previous problems:

1. Could not access some users personal folders in Documents and Settings -
I fixed this by re-setting folder ownership in folder properties/ security/
advanced/ owner.

2. Had missing (non-default) OE personal folders and inbox and empty inbox
and sent mail due to new folders/dbx file created during re-install. Could
not find the correct folders .dbx file even after searching with hidden files
visible or even a commnad line search for *.dbx on all C drive. Thai issue is
still not fixed and a I have a separate post (missing OE folders... in XP
performance and maintenence discussion group

You should try rebooting the computer after the registration of the
inetcomm.dll. Sometimes, just rebooting alone can fix the problem.

The problem with blank appearing messages can also be be caused by a setting
in Internet Explorer.

Open Internet Explorer, click View/Encoding and uncheck AutoSelect and
choose instead Western European (ISO). Then try reading your messages.
Good luck.

As for the old folders.dbx, it's not really essential as there are
alternative methods of "inserting" a foreign DBX file into your setup. See
Steve Cochran's website for more in the last paragraph on this page:

Tried re-booting (already had) - no change.

IE6 and OE (read) encoding now set to Western European (ISO) - no change

Old folders is a problem for me as:

1. I have lost all mail in personally created folders "pending" and "saved"
( I do try to follow good practice),

2. I have lost my latest mails in inbox and sent mail, due to old folder.dbx
loaded and cannot find the correct folderr.dbx file (the one I backed up).

Any more ideas please? Have considered un-installing IE and OE and
re-installing? If you think this may be a good idea what is the safest way to
do this?

At this stage of the game, the only thing I can think of is to use DBXpress
from www.oehelp.com which can extract from disk even those messages that
were on a disk before formatting it. While not expensive, the success of
the program depends on not having overwritten the old data with new on the
disk, and depending on the elapsed time since the problem surfaced, it may
not do what you need to have done. Sorry, but that's about the only option
I can think of at this time. Good luck.

As for the blank messages, all of the usual "fixes" have been provided and I
doubt that a reinstall would do much better. What might work is to try
creating a new identity, switch to it and see if the problem is fixed then.
Often the default "Main Identity" created when OE is first setup is prone to
corruption and a new identity might work better.

Thanks for the further ideas. Actually I was one step ahead of you and tried
creating a new user (as I was having other problems with my old user account)
and tried importing what messages I had recover from my desktop, and....

Hey presto - all email content now visible! :))

So now I will bite the bullet and try DTExpress and see id I can recover the
lost folders.

Many thanks for your help.

See also here for message recovery techniques: www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#4
There is a good chance the lost folders are still there, but they are hidden
so you couldn't find them.

If you got DBXpress, then use the search feature first and see if it can
find them. If not, then try the extract from disk.
