My wife and I share an e-mail address but I may have to set up a separate
address for her (which would be used infrequently) to satisfy the
requirements of a site we each want to register on.
If it can be avoided, I don't want to screw around with log-ons, passwords
and the like and would like to be passively notified of any mail to the new
address, by which I mean I don't want to have to go somewhere every day just
to find out that there's no mail.
Which leads to my question: can mail to two addresses be downloaded together
and share one set of local folders?

check for mail. You can set it up in the same identity they you are using
now and it will share the Inbox. But, you might consider setting up a
second user created Inbox for this account to separate the messages.
First, create a local folder to be used as a second Inbox and name it
anything you want. Use this for one of the accounts, and the default
Inbox for the other.
Then create a message rule.
Where the message is from the specified account.
Move it to the specified folder & Stop processing more rules.
Click on: Specified Account and enter the account name for the second
Inbox.
Click on: Specified Folder and select the folder you created.
Name the rule.
Move this rule to the top of the rules list and the incoming messages will
be separated into their respective folders.

to establish a second address within the same identity. I've looked on Help
and Tools to no avail.

direction. What OE does is simply recognize addressees. So you
can configure as many email accounts (addressees) as you like
(for one or both Windows users).
Tools / Accounts / Mail / SELECT ONE / Properties / General
has a checkbox to activate the address, i.e. make OE download its email.

Guys, I'm ready to go but am confused by the three replies. Bruce's
instructions seem easy enough and Mac advises a Gmail account integrated
with OE. I'm not sure I understand Don's message. As I mentioned in my
original post, my #1 objective is to have the mail for the 2nd address
download at the same time as my 1st does. I do not want to have to do
something to go somewhere just to see if there is mail for the 2nd address.
Let's assume that objective is met either with Gmail or the 2nd address with
my ISP. Either way, when a new mail is initiated what would tell OE which
"From" address to use? Also, in his 1st reply, Bruce said I could set up a
message rule to put mail for the 2nd address into its own folder and to then
stop processing more rules. Does that mean I could no longer use my existing
rules (which isn't a big deal) which dump certain "From" addresses and
certain Subject words into the Deleted items folder?

Inboxes, (two created by me).
Regarding Stop processing more rules................
In general:
Have all rules that Delete it from server first.
Rules that divert mail to folders next.
All others last.
Make sure that every rule also has Stop processing more rules checked,
unless that option is grayed out. The reason for this is so rules don't
interfere with each other. It doesn't stop the other rules from working.

OE will reply using the email address that the message was sent to.
With a new mail, the 'From' line has a drop down arrow to the right end, so
that you can use an email address other than the default one.

OK, I set up the address and had some server problems which were resolved by
my ISP's tech support. Everything's working, including the new folder and
message rule. I just have one question over an extremely trivial matter. Is
there a way to change the sequence in which the local folders are listed on
the left? I do notice that the five folders that I have set up are at the
bottom of the list, under the fixed folders that come with OE.

order below them. The only way to move user created folders around among
themselves is to rename them. Possibly put a number in front like 1-My
Inbox, 2-Friends. That would put the My Inbox above the Friends folder.

I noticed that option to choose the "From" name when I first tried sending a

I have at least half a dozen different email adresses set up as seperate
"accounts" within one identity in OE. Appropriate message rules, monitoring
either the "from" or "to" address or the subject send them to the relevant
local folders.
