Outlook Express creates temporary files in folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp

The names of these files are: wbk****.tmp and their size is zero. Where
**** appears to be random alpha (A-Z) and numeric (0-9). The length of
**** is 3-4 characters.

There are files of this name format which do have content. The content
varies from scripts, jpgs, pdf, etc.

When I exit Outlook Express the files with content get deleted. The zero
content files remain. Last night, I manually removed over 17,000 such files.

This is happening on two machines. My version of OE is 6.00.2900.5512
[xpsp.080413-2105]

How can I get rid of these temp files?

OE Tools | Options | Maintenance | Cleaning Up Messages: None of the options
here will delete the contents of...

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp <=this folder, or

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files <=this folder.

We've learned that with IE8 installed, temporary files for emails *and*
attachments you've opened (and every time you've opened them) are located in

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp <=this folder.

After a reboot, you can delete the contents of the Temp folder manually
(Windows won't allow you to delete anything needed during the current boot)
or you can delete the contents of Temp and Temporary Internet Files folders
via Disk Cleanup or via third-party applications (e.g., ATF-Cleaner;
http://www.majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html).

Thanks for the answer and the tip - I'm kind of a newbie to newsgroups.

YW & thanks for your feedback.

Another tip: Always state your IE verson and full Windows version (e.g.,
WinXP SP3; Vista x64 SP2) in your first post to an MS newsgroup, please. (I
could tell by your posts' headers that you're running WinXP SP3 and I could
tell by your questions that you'd installed IE8. <wink>)

Robear,

Loaded ATF_Cleanup and tested it. It's pretty neat and cleaned up a lot of
stuff; however, it doesn't do the Temp folder file purge. I think MS needs
to clean-up their code.

I'll manually delete the files on a periodic basis. Not elegant, but it
does the job.

Thanks for your help

Richard

Did you reboot prior to running ATF-Cleaner?

Does Disk Cleanup do it (after a reboot)?

Windows won't allow the deletion of any files needed during the current boot
so neither ATF-Cleaner nor Disk Cleanup will necessarily delete everything
in TEMP folder.

I did it after a Restart. Is that not equivalent?
