Hello everyone,

I have a Windows Live Mail installed in my System XP SP3, together with
Outlook Express which came with Internet Explorer 7. Since I do not use
Windows Live Mail, I un-installed it. Before I knew it, all of the e-mails
which I stored in the Hard Drive by dragging them out from the Outlook
Expressed from then on required a program to open them. Since I couldn't find
Outlook Program to open them, I decided to go for Notepad. The stored mail
which were dragged out of the OE and stored elsewhere, now all open with
Notepad. I tried to change this icon to the previous white envelope icon, but
I couldn't find the source of the icon by right-clicking the Notepad-email/
Property/ Change icon/ Browse/ and then I didn't know where to go from
here... If anyone out there could help with this trouble, on how to restore
the proper original white envelope "program" icon, very much appreciated.
Thanks.

OE does not come with IE 7.

C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe is the location of Outlook
Express exe file.

I tried that one, but it didn't get it right. It would do something else, and
that something else is like this. Each time I clicked any saved mail (mail
dragged in a folder or desktop, with icon of Notepad of course,) it opens the
Outlook Express itself. It doesn't open the mail. Strange, wouldn't you say?
I also re-installed IE7. But it didn't solve it either. So at the moment, it
bears the Notepad icon, but the e-mail opens well. Thanks for replying.

You can drag the txt messages into an OE folder and then | File | Save As
and save them as an eml file, but they will be saved as an unsent message
and you can only do one at a time.

There probably is a better way, but the answer eludes me at the moment.

Rename each of the EML files you'd renamed to TXT files back to EML files
then drag them (one-at-a-time or as a group) into any open OE folder.

NB: Do NOT rename all TXT files on your HDD to EML files, just the OE
messages.

QED: Why did you drag the EML files out of OE in the first place?

It's a long story. I used to keep losing emails, because of computer crash or
Hard Drive malfunction. From then on, I constantly drag them out of the OE,
and save them in folders and DVD as .eml files. Each time I had problem with
my PC, I just go there referring to some of those mails. I have more than
4000 of them. They are vitally important to me, dated way back to 1997. I
can't do without them. That's why I save them out of the OE.

Now, regarding to the renaming of the file extensions. At the moment, they
are all with .eml file extension everywhere, but all with a Notepad icon, i.e
without the usual headers of normal email when opened. That means, when I
open any one of them, they are exactly as any .txt (although their icons bear
the .eml extension.)

I have dragged them into the OE, and they assume the normal open white
envelope icon like the others inside there. But the minute I drag them out of
the OE, they appear as Notepad with extension .eml (remember that, as I said
before with my original post that I was forced to have it opened with
something that caused me to choose Notepad when asked about the program to
open it with.)

Thanks for the on-going help.

I did just as you said. But the result is now, the icon is not as it was used
to be, but a small white rectangular paper icon with the OE picture in the
middle. The cause of this is, propbably, because of the constant switching
between the selection of either .msimn or Notepad. The icon of the white
envelope has disappeared from Explorer's FileType under EML. There, it was a
Notepad already, but I still followed what you said, but there was no white
envelope icon to be seen in "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express -> msimn.exe
---> select your white envelope :-) ". Thank you again.

I have the msimn.exe in the C:\Program Files\Outlook Express,
right click -> properties -> Version 6.0.2900.5512
there is the white envelope icon inside this msimn.exe
What is your version?

When you do this sequence

file explorer -> options -> tools -> folder options -> file types -> EML ->

Change Icon -> Browse -> C:\Program Files\Outlook Express -> open msimn.exe
you can see the window with several icons to select by mouse
How many icons do you see and how do they look like?

You can use any exe or dll with icons inside for the same purpose.

Also it is possible to copy this icon from msimn.exe and use it
as separate file envelope.ico for EML file type.
I have it on my computer now. :-)

Aleksey.

I fully understand what you are saying. The version I have is exactly the
same as yours, 6.0.2900.5512.

There are 5 files in the sequence up to C:\Program Files\Outlook Express :
- msimn.exe
- oemig50.exe
- setup50.exe
- wab.exe
- wabmig.exe

Opening the msimn.exe will take me to Selection of Program File to open the
email with. Under this category, there is no white envelope icon. I checked
other computers, they have a white envelope icon. I know the reason why there
is no white envelope icon in mine. In fact, as I explained earlier at the
beginning of this thread, I have just un-installed the "Windows Live Maill."
I didn't know it has a precedence over the Outlook Express. When it was
removed, it took away with it the white envelope icon, leaving nothing behind
to open the email of the OE with. So, when I try to open the email of the OE
from the folder where it is saved, it asks for the application to open it
with. And I don't know how to restore that white envelope icon back to the

"explorer -> options -> tools -> folder options -> file types -> EML ->

Change Icon -> Browse". I tried to use the "Change icon" in there, and it
showed me "Shell32.dll" with many icons to choose from, but unfortunately,
there was no white envelope icon for the email there.

Now, I also tried the .dll and .exe files you advised, but to no avail. I am
not quite sure of what to do next. If you still have more idea, very much
appreciated. Thanks.

Just for a test, I re-installed back the "Windows Live Mail." To my surprise,
all the white envelope icon automatically is restored back. My suspicion was
right, in that I doubted very much that the culprit could well be the
removing of the WindowsLiveMail. And exactly, it was.

Now, the help I need is, what would be the best and safest way of
un-installing the "Windows Live Mail" without affecting the Outlook Express'
saved e-mails in different folders, I mean, without taking away the white
envelope icon application to open the mails.

Many thanks.

Control Panel, Folder Options, File types, .eml, Advanced, highlight open,
Edit

The reason that changing to OE for opening eml files just opens the OE
program is that the open action did not have /eml:%1
Change Application used to perform action to "C:\Program Files\Outlook
Express\msimn.exe" /eml:%1
Change Application from wlmail to msimn

Now you can uninstall WLMail.

See Ron's reply.

A few comments:

If I were you, I'd dedicate the time to address the crashing and/or HDD
malfunctioning. If none of that was happening, you wouldn't have been in
this predicament in the first place.

You could have very easily dragged any messages in a Windows Live Mail
folder directly into an open OE folder before you uninstalled Windows Live
Mail.

There are better & less problematic ways of maintaining a backup of your OE
data than dragging messages into various & sundry Windows folders (e.g.,
http://www.oehelp.com/OEBackup/Default.aspx).

Ron Sommer:

I went to Folder Options, File types Tab, and I found the white envelope
icon "EML -> Windows Live Mail Message." I clicked on this, and it's
selected, then I pressed the button "Advanced," which took me to "Edit File
Type" Dialog box. Under the "Actions:" I highlighted the "open," then clicked
the "Edit" button. In the field of "Application used to perform action:" I
found C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe" /eml:%1

I changed this by clicking the "Browse..." button to "C:\Program
Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" and added a space and /eml:%1

Also I changed the field of Application from wlmail to msimn. Then I clicked
OK twice and closed the Folder options Dialog Box.

From Add and Remove in the Control Panel, I un-installed "Windows Live
mail." Now, back to test the OE. I dragged an email from the OE into the
desktop, and it turned to "unknown application" icon again. When I
double-clicked it, a Dialog Box of Windows prompted me as before, "Windows
cannot open this file.... What do you want to do?" Two options given: (1) Use
the Web service to find the appropriate program; (2) Select the program from
a list.

I selected the No.2, and the white envelope icon could no where to be found
again. I went to the Option Folder, and it was not there either. So, I hope
you still have more ideas of what to do next from this point on. Thanks
again.

When you selected (2), you should be looking in Outlook Express folder.

Yes, I was referring to Outlook Express, as follows:

- The "Open With" Dialog Box opens, and nothing of the white envelope icon
there. When I click the Browse... to Program Files -> Outlook Express -> and
in this folder, there are five items:

- msimn.exe
- oemig50.exe
- setup50.exe
- wab.exe
- wabmig.exe

I was not sure which one to choose here, because there was no white envelope
icon there. Again thanks for your time.

MSIMN.EXE

You can change

1) the icon by

explorer -> options -> tools -> folder options -> file types -> EML ->

Advanced -> Change Icon -> Browse ->
go to C:\Program Files\Outlook Express -> select msimn.exe -> select icon

if you do not find the white envelope at this point then
a) msimn.exe is damaged ( very unlikely ) or
b) msimn.exe keeps its icons in some dll in the same folder ( not sure ) or
c) ??? - something really strange happens

2) the opening application by

explorer -> options -> tools -> folder options -> file types -> EML ->

Advanced -> select 'open' -> edit -> Browse ->
go to C:\Program Files\Outlook Express -> select msimn.exe ->
add the text /eml:%1 to have the string exactly like this (including the quotation marks )
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /eml:%1
also there 'Topic' - System, 'Application' - msimn.exe, 'Use DDE' - set
( if you have not 'open' line in 'Actions' you can use 'New' button to create it )

I have the OE and WLM on computer, I did not uninstall live mail,
I have made the changes 1) and 2) and I have the white envelope icon
and the emls are opened by OE.

Is your version of OE english? Possibly some localized versions keep the icons
in separate dll files.

Aleksey.

OK. I selected msimn.exe and opened it with this program. But in doing that,
it immediately opened the OE folder itself but not the email. I closed it,
and this time attempting to open the email. Instead of opening it, it asks
for a program to open it with, as before (like a routine.) It seems, it has
ignored the selection. I repeatedly did the process but the same result. Do I
need to re-install the IE7? Thanks again for your valuable time.
