Outlook Express has the feature of being able to automatically play music
when an email is opened by the recipient, and I would like to use this
function when I send an email, but I have been unable to get it to play the
music. I was wondering if anyone knows how to get this feature to work.
I am wanting to do this for sending email to someone who is very ill, so
your help will be oh so very appreciated!
This is what I did:
Opened Outlook Express (I am using version 6). Clicked on Create Mail. Typed
an email message. Clicked on Format. Clicked on Background. Clicked on Sound.
The Background Sound window appeared. In the Background Sound window, clicked
on Browse. Navigated to the folder that contains the sound/music file I
wanted to add to the email. Then double clicked on the sound/music file I
wanted to add to the email. Then clicked on OK. Then clicked send email.
As soon as I clicked on "send", I got this message: "One or more of the
pictures in this message could not be found. When you send this message these
pictures will not be included. Are you sure you want to send this message?"
(Note - there's no pictures in the email, just text and the option of sending
the background music.)
The only way to send the message is to press "OK".
However, it doesn't seem to work. The recipient doesn't hear any music
playing when they open the email.
I tried "attaching" the song as an attachment, but that doesn't help,
either. (The music is an mp3 file.)
Might someone know how to get this to work? (Even as far as not getting the
message of "One or more of the pictures in this message could not be found.
When you send this message these pictures will not be included. Are you sure
you want to send this message?")
(Remember that you can't literally test it from the same computer you sent
it from, because the email can just reference the music in your personal file
that you pulled it from, and make you think that it's really working. :)
The email has to be opened by someone at a different computer.) [The other
thing to remember is to turn your sound on before opening the email, if you
normally have it turned off.]
I have done a little trouble-shooting, and have made sure that the "Send
Pictures with Message" is enabled on the menu bar, under Format, but that did
not solve the problem. I can hear the song playing in the background as I
compose the email, but as I mentioned, it does not play when it is received
by the recipient. The size of the email, when it is received, is only 10kb,
so it is obvious that the song is not being sent along with it.
Is there anyone who has been able to get this feature to work? Or who might
know a workaround? (I know you can edit the HTML by going to "View" on the
menu bar and enabling "Source Edit", and then clicking on the "Source" tab.)
(But this is too advanced for me!)
I'm hoping, though, that there is an easy solution that I am overlooking,
and that someone else has been able to get it to work. :)
I just can't tell you what your help means to me!
Thank you oh so much!

I just want to say THANK YOU, for all of the input and guidance! This was
my first time using a newsgroup (thus all the multiple posts, that I didn't
know weren't necessary), and my goodness has everyone been so kind and
helpful!
Thank you so much for pointing me in the direction of the official Microsoft
document that confirmed that mp3's could not be used in the emails
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883355) -- the page had a lot of useful
information on it, and it was the definite answer to all of my questions!
How wonderful to have been pointed straight to it, as I had searched and
searched for information about this, but had not come across it.
Thank you, too, for pointing out that only midis and waves, overall, can be
used, and for educating me about them and about if they would be appropriate
to use size-wise, etc.
Thank you for all of the little tidbits, too, that helped lead me to a
better understanding of what I needed to do. Everyone had something so
helpful they contributed, and it helped me grasp the concepts, that I hadn't
understood, a little bit better.
I just wanted to really say *thank you* -- it's just wonderful to be able to
come here, and ask questions, and have such thoughtful people on the other
end reaching out to offer answers. I am very grateful to have found you.
With so many thanks,

to the Switch converter which I already have and does increase the size. TY.
Bruce
Hi Bruce and Panic,
I wanted to follow this direction, which everyone's been so kind to point me
in, and so wanted to ask a few more questions.
I downloaded CDex, Panic, but the wave files it made increased the size from
5 mb to 55 mb, so I wanted to make sure I wasn't on the wrong path, since you
felt the size should not be increased when converting from a mp3 to a wave.
This is what I have done:
1) I did a search for CDex, and downloaded "CDex 1.70 beta 2".
(http://www.download.com/CDex/3000-2646_4-12068.html?tag=mncol lead me to
http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=cdexos&filename=cdex_170b2_enu.exe&use_mirror=voxel, where I clicked on the mirror).
2) I then installed it.
3) Upon opening it for the first time, I got a message that the driver
"wnaspi32.dll" was missing, and so I read the help material about needing the
ASPI driver.
4) I then downloaded the driver from here --
http://www.nero.com/enu/support-faq-cs.html?s=sub&t=Error%20Message, question
#2, which goes to ftp://ftp6.nero.com/wnaspi32.dll; (note - the old link that
was in the original material does not work any more; re:
http://www.nu2.nu/aspi/).
5) I then copied and pasted the driver into the CDex application folder. (I
think that most people won't need the driver, but for some reason, I didn't
have it.) It allowed me to open the program with no problem.
6) In using the program, I chose the "Convert Compressed Audio File(s) to
WAV File(s)", which is the lower of the two colored buttons on the right-hand
side; (if you mouse over them, you can see their names).
7) I chose the directory/folder that my mp3 was in, and highlighted the file
that I wanted to convert from a mp3 to a wave.
8) I clicked "Convert".
9) It was a very easy program to install and use, as this portion of the
software doesn't give you too many options to have to choose from.
10) The new file went into a different folder (for me it was C:\Documents
and Settings\Karen\My Documents\My Music\MP3); [tho not sure why it went into
an mp3 folder when it was a wave file].
11) The new wave file was 55 mb. (Which would be too big to embed in an
email.)
12) As I mentioned, the original mp3 file was 5 mb, so I wanted to ask you
if you could double-check the results you get on your end, as I have gone
over the process many times, but can't see any place where I can "intervene"
to make the file smaller.
Perhaps you could tell me if you used a different function in the program --
I've looked through everything, and couldn't find anything, but being so new
to it all, it's hard for me to know what I might be overlooking.
Goodness, I hope I explained that well enough. If I didn't, just whistle. :)
Thank you so much for immediately thinking of a conversion program that
might allow me to send a small enough wave file in an email, so that the song
function could work.
I'll keep my fingers crossed that you are still able to convert an mp3 to a
wave, with out the change in size, and that you're able to point me in the
correct direction for doing that within the program.
With so many many thanks,
-- Karen

I just wanted to make sure this link, from my post a minute ago, was working
correctly, as it is showing strangely in the other post (and in the quote of
it, above). For some reason the right-bracket and period are included in the
link, making the link inactive. So I wanted to make sure there was a working
link in the thread -- the address is http://www.nu2.nu/aspi/ .
Thank you again, oh so very much!

Happy happy day to everyone,

I had a PowerPoint presentation that used mp3 files for the audio. Problem
was that all the files had to be sent with the basic program or it wouldn't
work. I found I could imbed .wav files and that got rid of that particular
problem but it made the PPT presentation huge. Using CDex mp3 to wave I was
able to use its Convert feature to create .wav files from the .mp3s which
were just about the same size as the original. That allowed me to imbed the
audio as part of the PPT program without increasing the size.

However, I don't see where to change the extenuation from MP3 to WAV. All I
do see is it telling me that I need Firefox to use it.

I had the same problem using Windows Mail. I found the Microsoft position about this at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883355/en-us
I suggested a workaround to force Windows Mail to encode a mp3 audio file and use it as background sound, but it is quite long and complicate, as it involves saving the e-mail to an .eml file, manually editing it. So this is not a practical way if it is to be used often.
Anyway it's a shame that Microsoft semms refuse any upgrade to Outk?look Exprss 6 and Windows Mail.
Older version of Outlook Express supported mp3 as background sound.
Cheers
