Hi

How to Transfer Outlook Express files from Windows XP SP2 to
Vista Home Premium WITHOUT using Windows Easy Transfer

1)

I have a Dell 9400 inspiron running Windows XP SP2 but the LCD screen
stopped functioning when a little bit of cleaning liquid seeped behind the
screen during cleaning process.

Connecting the laptop to a VGA monitor to boot up the system also FAILED.

The OLD laptop hard drive Toshiba travelstar SATA 80 GB.

I know how to transfer files and settings from one computer to another
using Wiindows Easy Transfer but that solution does NOT work for me
because the old laptop hard drive is NOT bootable but ONLY accessible
via a USB connection.

I bought a new Dell Vostro 1700 laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium
yesterday.

Can some one suggest different ways to transfer Microsoft Outlook Express
files,
accounts and settings from the OLD Inspiron 9400 hard drive to the NEW
Vostro 1700 ?

2) Why is it NOT possible to use "File and Settings Transfer wizard" in
Windows XP SP2 to "Export to a data file" and copy that
file to the Windows Vista computer and use "Windows Easy Transfer"
to "Import" that data to the new computer ?

TIA

Bruce,

I migrated Outlook Express usenet posts and news accounts from one
Windows XP computer to another Windows XP computer using File
and Settings Transfer.

After the import, I opened OE6 and was able to see the old news accounts
and old usenet posts on newsgroups but when I click on the accounts
the old usenet posts disappear immediately and only the last (current)
300 posts are being downloaded from the news server.

I want to keep the old usenet posts also.

Can you suggest any solutions ?

OE only mirrors what is on the server. Assuming your account settings were
transferred correctly:

While in a newsgroup: View | Current View. Make sure Show All Messages and
Group Messages By Conversation are checked.

Tools | Options | Read. Uncheck: Get XXX headers at a time. Then, right
click on the newsgroup in the Folder Tree | Properties | Local File | Reset.
Switch to another folder and then back and all available messages will be
downloaded again.

Or go to Tools | Options | Maintenance | Clean Up Now and choose the group,
or server at the top and then Reset.

It would be a good idea to compact your folders when you're done.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

My personal preference is to disregard synchronizing and rather have OE
check for news when it checks for mail. Tools | Accounts | News. Check: "
Include this account...........".
