2: What folder were they in?
3: Did you delete them or did something else happen?
4: Are they in Deleted Items?

You *might* have them backed-up (have you checked the trash?).
I create a new e-mail account with a new name, all same as the original
settings, and use it to download new mails. It'll download everything that's
still left on the server. Works well; used it more than once. They're only
marked read on the original e-mail account.
This assumes they're still on the server of course.
