Hello,

When I exit OE, I receive a message, "To free up disk space, OE can compact
messages", asking me if I would like to do this now.

In my previous installation of OE, I manually compacted my messages, and
really no not want to have to tell it "no" each and every time I exit the
application.

Is there any way to disable this annoying alert?

Thanks for any help with this,

Jon

You can't remove the prompt, but I see from your message headers that you
are fully updated. In the past, when you closed OE for the 100th time you
would see this prompt. Manually compacting did not remove it, but now it
does.

So, since you usually manually compact, do it again and you won't see the
warning for another 100 closings of OE.

Why does OE insist on compacting folders when I close it?:
http://www.insideoe.com/faqs/why.htm#compact

Compacting your folders periodically is a must to keep OE functioning well
and at some point, you may lose all your saved messages if you don't. When
you delete messages, they are only marked for deletion and the space they
had used, remains until you compact, or the space is eventually overwritten.

See:
www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2

With SP2, automatic background compacting was removed due to problems it
caused. Now you will get a prompt to compact after 100 OE closings, which
you should do and don't touch anything until it has finished. See this for
more information:
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact

To keep things running smooth, and for faster compacting:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt and you may lose mail. Create your own user defined folders for
storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder
regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as
empty as is feasible.

And backup often.

Thanks, Bruce. I used to only compact every few months, but I guess I'm
forced to doing it every couple of weeks now. :(

Thanks for letting me know that letting it compact will get rid of the
alert, at least.

OE will want to compact after you have opened it 100 times since the last
time it was compacted.

Actually, it is after 100 closings.

But if 923694 is installed (according to Jon's message headers, it is), the
Compact Count will be reset to 0 (zero) when you compact manually.

Well you have to open it to close it.

That's why I said "since the last time it was compacted."

True, but the prompt for compaction does not occur until you try to close.
