Have a friend that says he can not open any attachments, this started this
week end.
He checked the preferences, and all seems ok.

Any suggestions as what to check?

Is your friend using OE? All attachments, or some? Is he using XP/SP2 0r
SP3?

Tools | Options | Security. Uncheck: "Do not allow
attachments................."

Not much to go on with the limited info.

no problem, just sending along what he has told me.

He can not open any attachments. This was his initial email "I can't open
any attachments. I could open them Saturday??? I think there were some
updates that might have blocked them from opening them, but I'm not sure.
do you have any suggestions on how to open the attachments?'

Most recent version of OE, I am emailing him again, from what I know he can
open the email but not any the attachments.
He has not said if he gets an error, but am checking.

Ask him if he just installed IE8 (IE Help | About will tell him his IE
version) and if he disabled his anti-virus application before doing so?

hi

Just talked to him,
he has version 8.0
and in the help in oe it says microsoft Internet mail.
He has had this version for a little bit. He went away for a day, and when
he came back he could not open previous attachments.

Bruce, I'm not sure trying to help you help him remotely is going to be
satisfactory for any of us. Any chance that he can communicate with us
directly via this thread?

QED: Did this behavior only start after he'd installed IE8?

QED: Had he disabled his anti-virus application as well as any anti-spyware
applications prior to installing IE8?

QED: What happens when he tries to open an attachment?

QED: Can he not open any attachments or just some attachments?

QED: You mention "previous attachments:" Can he open newly received
attachments?

I understand where you are coming from. Basically I will have to go up and
check it out, but can answer most of those questions.

#1 checking on this, but he did say they were working and all of sudden they
stopped, Though I am assuming he has had it for awhile
since he installs all updates when he gets on.

#2 question knowing him, I would say the answer is no.

#3 If he right clicks on it and goes open, absolutely nothing happens.

#4 he can not open any attachments in OE whatsoever.

#5 I will send him an attachment to see. He isn't home right now. In talking
to him earlier, he could not open any attachments.

Is this the same friend whose IE7 problems have persisted after he installed
IE8, Bruce? =>
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general/browse_frm/thread/d22670ce0c5f0ec0

If so, I'd say he's got a hijackware infection on his hands.

Then I suspect that he'd not had IE8 installed for a while, that it
installed via Automatic Updates over the weekend (which would have required
user approval, BTW, so someone should have known it was installed), and that
the anti-virus application (and other third-party security applications) had
not be disabled prior to installing it, Bruce.

We're seeing quite a bit of "I just installed IE8 and now I can't open any
attachments" posts since IE8 was released to Windows Update the last week of
April. None of those posters had disabled their security apps beforehand
either...while those who did have not encountered the problem.

Again, trying to help you help *him* remotely just isn't going to work, I'm
afraid.

On the plus side, uninstalling IE8 should correct the problem:

I was afraid of that. What, if any, error message(s) does he get when he
tries to open an attachment? Does this affect all attachments or only some?

What anti-virus application/security suite is installed? What anti-spyware
apps (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall, if any? If all of
these were not disabled (and the Windows Firewall enabled) prior to
installing and/or uninstalling IE8, he may have s***ed the pooch, Bruce.

What's his full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1)? If WinXP SP3,
did he install IE7 before or after he installed SP3?

[I told you this'd be difficult!]

hi,

Oh I understand where you are coming from. If it was a laptop, I would of
brought it over here. (unlike the other one with the IE problem, which I
will try to get over here tomorrow)
I believe he has vista. Though I dont' want to keep bouncing back between
the 3 I am trying to get help getting to work properly.

Problem is trying to help older people out with some of these problems. The
above I am going to try and get over his house Friday, and want to try some
suggestions.
I wonder if you ad a new acct, under oe then make it the default, then try
to send a attachment. Part of the problem I am still with xp, so I have to
pace myself working with
vista.

His attachments worked prior to Sunday, so i would have to say sp3 ws
installed before 8,. (supposition)

Bruce

Who's running Vista? (And why am I getting a sudden case of "dj vu all
over again"?)

It'd be best to have these users post & reply to their own threads, please,
Bruce. Best of luck.

Having same problem with OE on Vista SP1 and IE8. Can save attachment but
not open them. All type of attachments are affected,i.e. pdf,.123,MP3,etc.
Everything was working fine for the last year or so. About a month ago,
problem surfaced. Could be caused by any one of the auto downloads from
MS. Turner off firewalls, virus programs, reset preferences and
associations.

Seems like there are several other users with the same problem. Any
Solutions, yet?????

To avoid confusion, please begin a new thread about your specific problems.
State your IE version and full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP2)
in your first post.
