MAPI store problem

My wife was using Gmail as her email program of choice. She wanted to try
Outlook Express (I personally use Outlook, and did not want to intermingle
her email with my email), so I downloaded all of her contacts and saved email
to OE.

She now has decided that she would rather use Gmail, because she is more
familiar with that program and, as simple to use as it is, cannot figure out
how to use OE.

So, I am now trying to export her email back to Gmail. I found an article
online that guides you through the process of exporting Outlook files to
Gmail, so I have created a Outlook identity for her, and have tried to use
the export feature in OE to save her 12,000+ email files to Outlook. I can
then export them to Gmail using the guide I found.

My problem comes when I try to export the OE files to her Outlook profile
that I have created. When clicking on the export tab in OE then selecting the
Messages tab, I am taken to the Export Messages dialog, where I slect OK to
export the messages to Outlook. I then select the profile I have created for
her, then select all to export all of her OE folders to her Outlook profile.

When I click next, I get the following error message. "The export could not
be performed." "Your default MAPI store could not be opened."

I am totally lost as to what a default MAPI store is, where to find it, and
what to do to correct this problem so I can export my wife's OE files to
Outlook then to Gmail. Any help woud be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Instead of exporting to Outlook, try importing from Outlook.

Import your messages or account from Outlook Express to Outlook.

Applies to: Microsoft Office Outlook 2007

If the missus has been accessing the Gmail account in Outlook Express via
IMAP (not MAPI) and has not deleted any of the messages sent to the Gmail
address, they should all still be available in the folders on the Gmail
webpage.

If, however, she's been accessing the Gmail account in OE via POP3, most of
the above will not be true.

May we assume that MS Outlook also installed on the machine? If so, you'd
be better off asking your question in microsoft.public.outlook.general
newsgroup, Ed.

Thanks, Bruce for the help.

When I open Outlook, I get the message that there is a new account created
and wants to know if I want to import the OE files into Outlook. I told it to
import them, so hopefully her files are in the profile I created for her.

Again, thanks.

Thanks PA Bear.

Yes, they are both on the same machine. I have followed Bruce's suggestion
and tried to import them into Outlook.

And, yes they are probably still on Gmail's server. I went to her account,
and there are several thousand files in the Archive folder. I assume when
they were downloaded by OE POP3 program, Gmail also saved them as archive
files.

Again, Thanks.

If the account was configured in OE not to remove messages from the server
(Tools | Accounts | Mail | Gmail | Properties | Advanced | Delivery), yes,
that would be the case.

Whether the messages in Archive folder would download into OL without having
imported the data from OE, I dunno.
