No, no defaults have been changed unless you yourself changed something,
which doesn't really sound like the problem.
Have you tried doing a power-down shut-down, waiting about a minute with
power removed from the computer, restart it and see if you can open the
attachment again. If not:
"Things Happen" and the queston now is whether it's a temporary problem or
malware or file corruption. Or is could be as simple as the attachment
having been damaged in transit.
Were you expecting the attachment?
If not, check with the sender to see if he indeed sent it to you on purpose.
Did he?
If you don't KNOW the sender, IGNORE the above advce!
If not, it's quite likely you have malware now from trying to open the
attachment.
It's happened only one time per your description. So:
Can you get someone else to send you an attachment or two and see if it's
a one-time thing or does it affect ALL attachments in all your e-mails?
Try sending yourself an e-mail with an attachment and see if you can open
it.
Are you using OEQuotefix? If so, try uninstalling it temporarily and see
if that helps. Afterwards you can put it back.
If nothing has helped so far, try using System Restore to reset the
system to an earlier date, like yesterday or the day before, and see if that
restores proper attachment opening.
If it does, IGNORE the attachment that wouldn't open, and delete it
immediately. Assuming you know the Sender, notify them also as they may not
be aware they are sending malware with their e-mails.
Assuming you keep a VSS supported backup of your boot drive, usually C, try
recovering using the earliest disk image you have prior to this problem
appearing. That should definitely fix it.
Oh, what version of IE (OE is part of IE) are you using, and what is your OS
and its version?
Answer these questions if/when you come back, and I'm sure I or someone else
might be able to help you.

Twayne`
