The exact message I get is:
Outlook Express could not be started. The application was unable to open the
Outlook Express message store. Your computer may be out of memory or your
disk is full. Contact Microsoft support for further assistance.
(0x80004005,183)

I get this message while in Outlook and while it is operating just fine. The
message pops up every couple mins every day and night interrupting whatever
I'm doing. There is no response to the box that makes it go away.

My hard drive is about 55% full so I have 33GB free so I don't think being
out of disk space is the real problem. I have 1GB of memory. I'm running with
XP Pro. I get this message when in OE even right after a reboot with nothing
else is running so I don't understand why it might think it doesn't have
enough memory.

Has anyone else run into this, or know what I might do to remedy this?

You mention Outlook and Outlook Express. Is the problem with both?

If you can get in OE, you may just need to compact your folders.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Compact Your OE Folders:

If you can't get into OE at all, then start here.

Hi Bruce.

Outlook Express. Sorry about the mistype.

I have tried compacting the folders before, the last time within the last
month, so unless I need to do that frequently, that doesn't solve the
problem. Today, compacting the folders isn't doing anything, I'm guessing
because I can't get rid of the message box.? Any thoughts?

I seem to recall that Outlook Express can only handle file XX size. I don't
remember the magic number, but something like if a folder gets larger than
1GB maybe.

Try a new identity first.

You may have a damaged identity especially if it is the default Main
Identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it.
If all is well, you can import your messages and Address Book from the old
identity and delete it.

How to Create and Use Identities in Outlook Express
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=209169

An Outlook Express basic repair kit:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/oerepair.mspx#EHH

Make this the identity OE opens with. File | Identities | Manage Identities.

After you import your messages, do any of the following that you have not
done.

General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

And backup often.

Outlook Express Quick Backup (OEQB Freeware)

When you have everything you need from the old identity in the new one,
delete the old.
