My laptop recently is infected by Trojan virus and now get cleared by NOD32.
Some .exe files in the system have been however damaged.
I would like to re-install Window XP again.
But I worry that all my emails kept in last 3 years will be gone in the new
outlook express.
How could I keep and use them in the new OE same as before.
Thanks for advice.

Take your pick. (Yes, you will lose your messages if you don't back them
up).

Backup & Restore:
http://www.insideoe.com/backup/

Backing up and Cloning your OE Identities:
http://www.insideoe.com/backup/clone.htm

This freeware tool backs up everything in OE in seconds. Disregard what is
written in red. That is referring to a different program.

I so worry that I cannot fix it.
Seems very complicated.
Just wanting back up my emails and restore back for use in my new O/E.
Any simpler method or shareware to be found I dont mind paying?
Thanks.

How about this?

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of
your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder
location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the
location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write
the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options
Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.

Right click on the Outlook Express folder, (Message Store), and Send To the
Desktop. Copy it to Flash or DVD.

To restore, copy to the Desktop and remove the Read Only attribute in
Properties. In OE: File | Import | Messages. Select Microsoft Outlook
Express 6 and Import from an OE6 Store Directory and point to where you
saved it.

There isn't any shareware that is any easier than the choices I gave you.

I mentioned I needed to fix other things.
The thing is in fact I have gone today to pay $200 already to IT specialist
shop to recover my Buffalo external 500G hardisk data that has been greatly
damaged/disappeared by Trojan.
I saw they needed to scan over 3 hours the Buffalo disk now it is being
worked before recovering so it cost much their time.
Tomorrow I will have an answer.
I dont know how to recover hardisk data therefore I need help from IT
specialist.
They are expensive though and too far away for me to bring my 2 more bulky
laptops to keep emails back up.
I thought I could back up emails easily and quickly by myself and now let
see.

If you are not doing so already I would strongly suggest you perform online
offsite backup of all your data at least once a day.

We offer a professional service with full tech backup. As it is online the
server location is irrelevant but you may prefer to deal with someone in the
US rather than the UK, where we are based.

Whatever you select, make sure it is a proper backup system with reliable
and easy retrieval, both in case of disaster recovery and
accidentally-deleted individual file retrieval. Don't expect it to be free!

Beware of the many services that offer limited online storage and that only
do unencrypted file copying. Copying is not the same as a true backup,
which should mirror what is on your drive/s, including changed file names,
modified content and deliberately deleted files. And if you have a network
make sure the system can handle it. Quite a few will handle individual
computers only.
(Should you be interested in more info write to me privately.)

Now I just found out from AVG anti-virus report after almost 3 hours
scanning that only one of my 2 laptops using win xp has been infected only.
I shall need to reinstall the win xp for sure.
Fortunately, the other one using window vista is still clean and working
fine.
But the emails I keep in Windows Mail 6.0 there is quite big should be over
4G.
If I want to do back up and/or move this email storage to my 32G usb drive
instead for working in future, could I do it and how.
Thanks for advice.

Assuming these are the various *dbx files (including folders.dbx) you
can remove them to removable storage for safe-keeping. These files are
what OE uses to display your OE folders and their contents (e-mails).
You can transfer these files to your new laptop's desktop as well, and
then replace the newly created (empty) ones with the ones that you just
moved there by manual means or by importing them into OE.

Make sure folders.dbx is in that directory and that none of the files are
read only. Then use File | Import | Messages and choose OE6 (or 5) format
and then choose to import from a directory and then point to that directory.

I copied the one xxx.dbx file (about 422 mb) from the created folder on

I brought this usb drive to the new xp lap top, open the oe 6 program.
file/import/email/microsoft oe6/choose to import from a directory of this

but I could not find this dbx file from there.

I made it, I am happy, I finally made it...after 2 long months scratching my
head and hesitate to change to use my new laptop without 3 years old
messages there.
Now I understand folders.dbx is a dbx file comprising many of my over 20 big
monthly dbx files there (fromm 2007 till now every month)
each file is over 400 megabytes meaning about 10 gigabytes in the total dbx
files directory.
Just now I put only a one month dbx file in the usb drive but the
folders.dbx file in the same directory brought me also other dbx file names
into my new laptop oe6 program although each of those dbx files is empty.
But I could read that one month dbx file and attachment with no problems.
Thanks.
I understand the process now.
Although I should need more time and a bigger usb drive to transfer all of
them to my new laptop.
Now I shall need to erase the just transferred dbx files from the new laptop
I think right?
And preparing to copy and transfer once again when I finish all the dbx
files from old laptop into the external usb drive.
Next time, I should be able to make it all.
This question has bothered me quite a while you see my first email asking
how to do it despite I was so busy working with other family things.

Next time copy all the dbx files to one directory on the target machine and

Great. It works.
Now my 9 gigabytes, about 30 dbx files, all appeared in my new laptop OE6.
BTW, I have moved the email messages to the partitioned Drive D now no more
hidden in Drive C, my Drive D there should have about 100 gigabytes left,
how many gigabytes of emails maximum and how many dfx files maximum can be
stored in an OE6 program?
Just curious to know. Thanks.

People far mor knowledgable than I will probably respond but from my
experience (and from what I have read here) there is no maximum gigabytes,
but one should not exceed a few hundred MB per default folder (Inbox, Sent
etc) to maintain integrity and prevent random loss of messages. Compaction
should be undertaken frequently.

I -- together -- with a few other 'readers' here do not follow this
guideline. I have c. 1.5 GB in my Inbox, but I do back up daily (proper
backup to external, offsite server) so I could recover my inbox in case of
loss. You will see cries de coeur in this NG from people who have lost part
or all of the messages in their inbox.

I am not aware of a limit on the number of folders.

Fact: No OE dbx file can exceed 2GB. That is the limit.

Reality: Most people will see corruption long before that.

I know you like keeping your Inbox packed, but unlike most users, at least
you back up OE. For all others.......

General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in the Inbox or Sent Items. Create your own user
defined folders and move the messages you wish to save to them. Empty
Deleted Items folder daily. Although dbx files have a theoretical capacity
of 2GB, I recommend about a 300MB max for less chance of corruption.

Information about the maximum file size of the .dbx files that are used by
Outlook Express:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=903095

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything
until the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant
layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems
such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program
will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background
and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

And backup often.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/filecorruption.mspx

Compacting your folders periodically is a must to keep OE functioning well
and at some point, you may lose all your saved messages if you don't. When
you delete, or move messages, the space they had used remains until you
compact.

***Never touch anything until the compacting is finished.***

See:
www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2

With SP2, automatic background compacting was removed due to problems it
caused. Now you will get a prompt to compact after 100 OE closings, which
you should do, and don't touch anything until it has finished. If you
compact manually, at your convenience, this will also set the counter back
to zero. See this for more information:
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact

If you are fully patched, you will also now see a copy of your dbx files
being copied to the Recycle Bin as BAK files. Should something go awry
when compacting, the messages can easily be restored from this backup. A
manual compact will also reset the counter in the registry back to zero
now.

For more info, see the information outlined in red here:
www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2

Thanks, Bruce.
Good websites worth bookmarking.
By the way, regarding compaction, I had also a laptop using the notorious
slow Vista that I could not change to XP due to lack of drivers not
available.
But compaction process in Vista Windows Mail is working much faster than
doing in OE6.
In Windows Mail, it took less than 30 seconds to compact all my folders of
almost 9 gigabytes there when I am requested.
Comparing OE6 now I just did the compaction in my new LapTop according to
your advised procedure, it took 20 long minutes for the similar
folders/sizes.
It looks at least Vista do have a little good thing that can be commended?

It's not a Vista thing, it's Windows Mail. OE uses a fragile dbx file
system to store your message data. WinMail stores every message as a
separate eml file.

That said, the more often you compact OE, the less time it will take. The
way we use our machines is different for everyone, but I compact OE about
once a week and it never takes more that about 20 seconds.

And then with all of that said, all production of OE and WinMail ceased in
June, 2006. Windows Live Mail is the newest e-mail client from MS.

After last night's compaction, this morning I compacted it again.
It still took me 16 minutes.
About 5 minutes shorter than last night's though.
Where is Windows Live Mail found, in Win 7?
No more compaction needed there?
Thanks.

Before compacting, did you & do you always...

1. Move 99% of the messages in Inbox to one or more other, user-created
folder;

2. Empty Sent Items folder; and then...

3. Delete the contents of Deleted Items folder?

Win7 does not have a built in e-mail client, although some retailers are
bundling WLMail in the package. It does get compacted, but because of the
different filing system, it is smoother and faster.

WLMail can run in XP and Vista as well as Win7.

1. I moved all the previous month's messages in the inbox every month
2. I seldom empty Sent Items folder. But it should not be big megabytes
there. I will do it before compaction next time.
3. I delete all the messages in Deleted Items folder many times every day

Now I remember what the Windows Live is referred.
I used to have Windows Live Messenger in my Lap Tops.
I dont use it at all and find it inconvenient every time it appears in the
start-up so I simple uninstalled it.
Do you mean if I re-install Windows Live program and am to use Windows Live
Mail, I dont need Outlook Express anymore?

WLMessenger has nothing to do with e-mail.

WLMail is the so-called upgrade for OE and WinMail (Vista). It would/could
replace OE for you. However, you can run it along side of OE to see if you
like it.

You can run WLMail and OE at the same time and download incoming mail to
both if you want to give it a try. Sent messages will be only in the Sent
Items folder for the e-mail client used to send.

You can download it here if you wish.

Windows Live Mail (Overview & Features):
http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

I would suggest you subscribe to the WLMail newsgroup and read some of the
posts & replies. That will give you a better idea of what it is like.

Windows Live Mail [Desktop] Newsgroup.

In your newsreader:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop

On the Web:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop

If you want to run OE and WLMail at the same time:

In OE and WLMail:

Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Advanced - Check: Leave a copy of
messages on the server.

In OE or WLMail, (not both), check to Delete messages after X days to
satisfy your allotted space you get from your server.

Note that when you install WLMail, it will become the default e-mail
client. If you want to reclaim OE as default, see this.

Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Set Program Access and Defaults |
Custom + Down Arrow | Select the radio button for Outlook Express.

Make OE the default e-mail client:
