Overview:
A few months ago I first posted A Dummy's Guide to Hotmail. It was just
after Microsoft released Internet Explorer 5 and Outlook Express. I was
quite surprised when I found a little Hotmail beta feature available in OE
5. In fact, I was thrilled. Now I could check my Hotmail from Outlook
Express with my other email accounts, it would be great I thought. But I was
disappointed to find that I couldn't get Hotmail to work. I tried
everything, but it wouldn't work. I decided then what I must do. Seek the
answers! And share them with the world. I wanted to get this darn thing to
work!

Try This! - Hotmail Solution #1
The reason Hotmail won't work is because it doesn't work well with
proxies. This method will disable proxy server use. If you need to use a
proxy server it is advised that you skip to the second soultion which
doesn't require the proxy to be disabled.
From Outlook Express:
TOOLS | OPTIONS
Click on the Connection Tab.
Click on the Change button.
Click on the LAN Settings button.
Uncheck all of the boxes on this screen (Notice: It is suggested that
you write down which boxes where checked in case you have to reverse this
process later.)
Click OK until you have closed down all of the windows.
If you experience problems using the internet or checking email after you've
done this then you may need to use a proxy server. Follow the steps above
but instead of unchecking all the boxes, check which ever ones where checked
before, you should have written them down as instructed.

Try This! - Hotmail Solution #2
This method is good if you need or would prefer to access the internet
through a proxy server. This temporarily disables the proxy to check for
Hotmail. It still may not work for some people. If worst comes to worst you
can always contact your ISP and find out if they have a solution to this
problem.
From Outlook Express:
TOOLS | OPTIONS
Click on the Connection Tab.
Click on the Change button.
Click on the LAN Settings button.
On this screen uncheck the first two options.
Click on the Advanced button.
At the bottom of this screen you will see an Exceptions box, type the
following in that box:
services.msn.com; *.hotmail.msn.com
Click OK until you have closed all the windows.

Other known Hotmail and OE 5 Issues
If you have an old Hotmail account with a password that has less then eight
characters in the password you may need to get a new password. Sometimes
having a password with less than eight characters will cause Hotmail not to
work properly with Outlook Express 5.
