There seems to be more about nicknames than is apparent.

In Technet, for example, I find the information "Outlook keeps a nickname
list that is used by the automatic name checking feature in Outlook."

There are some KnowledgeBase articles (Q168641, Q164598, and Q169259) that
refer to the nickname list. But none of them tell me what the nickname list
really is. Outlook has a Nickname field, but this seems to be a field I can
use to enter nicknames, not the place where Outlook stores nicknames it
creates.

Can somebody please explain Outlook nicknames? Are there two types of
nicknames, one that Outlook automatically generates, and another I can
create? What is the nickname list that Outlook automatically creates? Where
is it?

any nickname you enter in that field is stored in a *.nick file. If you give
'Bob Jones' the nickname 'Sixpack' you can then type Sixpack in the To field
& Outlook will resolve it.
