I recently made an interesting discovery. Someone sent me an e-mail with
an intriguing attribute: upon opening this e-mail, it placed an
acknowledgement report in my "Outbox". I use MS Outlook '98. I believe
(although I'm not sure) the sender is using OL Express. I'm not aware of
any way to accomplish this within OL'98, and I wonder how the sender
managed to do this.

Incase these additional details might be useful:
The title bar of the outgoing acknowledgement says,
"Read: <subject text> - Report"
In the "From:" field, it says "on behalf of <recipient name>"
The body of the msg. is quite brief:
Your message

To: <recipient name>
Subject: <subject text>
Sent: 07/10/00 10:36

was read on 07/10/00 11:42.

It was only by chance that the presence of this ack.msg was brought to my
attention. Shortyly after opening the e-mail in question, I went to
close OL'98, and was warned that there were still messages remaining in
the Outbox.

If anyone can give me some clues about this, it would be greatly
appreciated. I'd like to know how the sender did this; how can I do it;
is there a way to automatically suppress the processing of ack.messages
sent to me by others.

Thanks.

OE5.01 and higher has an option to request or to send an acknowledgement of
receipt. This behavior can be access via Tools | Options | Receipts.

Which is a nice simple way of automatically confirming to spammers
that yours is a valid email address.

Greetings,
In OE 5 it can be disabled, but I prefer to have it optional. There are three buttons in Tools> Options> Receipts. The middle one is to "ask" ( Notify me for each Read Receipt Request ).
