I have Office 2007 and Windows Vista Premium. When replying to an email in
Outlook, I get an error message saying "The Add-In "Fax Extension"
(C:\Windows\System32\fxsext32dll) cannot be loaded and has been disabled by
Outlook. Please contact the Add-In manufacturer for an update. If no
uopdate is available, please uninstall the Add-In."
I do not need a FAX program. Can you tell me how to uninstall the Add-In?
Thanks,

Did you install it in the first place? Does it appear in the Trust Center?
Was this a clean install of Vista? Sounds to me like you tried to do an
upgrade installation.

Russ,
You are right. The installation of both Windows Vista and Office were
upgrades.
Does that help?

It explains why you have the problem. Upgrade installations are always
problematic.
Close Outlook.
Find and rename extend.dat.

I closed Outlook. My search for "extend.dat" and for "Extend.dat" resulted
in "no files found".

Enable viewing hidden files and folders.

Viewing hidden files is enabled. Searching finds no match for "extend.dat"
or for "Extend.dat".

Keep trying. It's there. You most likely need to get up to speed on
searching in Vista.

You were right again! Its bad when you don't know what you don't know.
I found the file, renamed it and the error message is gone. Thank you very
much.

Vista takes some getting used to. Some of the old reflexes from XP just
don't work anymore.

Russ,
I am sorry to report that the same error message has recurred. This happens
when I try to reply to an email in Outlook. Any suggestions?

What path did you use to extend.dat?
Should be something like this:
<drive>:\Users\%UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook

Yes, that is the path. When I got into that folder, I saw the two previous
"re-names" of extend.dat which were "extendold.dat" and "extendold2.dat". I
created "extendold3.dat" and upon the first try to reply to an email there
was no error. After a reboot, when I tried to reply to an email, the same
error recurred.

Try changing the file extension too.

I changed the name of "extend.dat" to "extendold3.dab", rebooted, tried to
reply to an email and got the same error.

You can always try deleting this key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Extensions
faxextension.dll
but it doesn't seem to work as consistently.

Do you know how I can remove the add-in per se?

I doubt you can. You never added it did you? Do you see it listed in the
Trust Center?
This is a bug courtesy of Microsoft. The error message is completely bogus.

Try This:
In outlook 2007, "Tools, Trust Center, Addins"; at the bottom of the page
will be a drop down which says "Manage: COM Add Ins". Select "Exchange
Client Extensions" and click on "Go". This will open the Add-in manager.
Deselect the option for Fax extension, click "OK", then close out of Outlook
and restart.

Thanks. I went to the Add Ins manager and there is no FAX Extension listed.
There is a listing for unified data collection for voice mail and fax.
Should I try deselecting that one?

Don:

This has been driving me crazy as well. Make sure you follow Pinoyin's
directions exactly. I think you may have skipped a step. I followed the
instructions and the error message is finally gone.

I had the same problem and this is how I got rid of it.

Under Tools, choose Trust Center.
On the left pane pick Add-ins.
From the bottom of the page under Manage drop down pick Client File
Extensions and press Go...
Unckeck the FaxExtensions and click OK
Done!

Thanks a million Pinoy......has driven me crazy for over a week and finally a
real fix for the problem. Had been searching for ever and turns out it was
so easy, but hard as hell to find the right answer.
