Addins. It is designed to sync calendars between Outlook and Apple
products.
Searching Google provides many examples of Outlook probems caussed by the
Itunes Outlook Addin (Outlook won't shut down; Outlook remains in task
manager processes; disruption of Outlook Calendar).
Until Microsoft provides a software fix (ideally, an option to lock out com
addins), be prepared to manually delete this program EVERY TIME you use the
Itunes software.

However, if you click on the itunes icon put on the desktop, you get a
windows installer program and that absolutly puts the program back into
Outlook and, in my case, stops Outlook from closing.
Also, deleting or renaming the itunes addin dll file doesn't work; the file
just comes back.
Any thoughts about how to kill the add in completely.

calendar synch connection or delete an existing one on the iTunes side of
things it won't get re-enabled. You can uncheck it in the COM Add-Ins dialog
to disable it.
That will set the LoadBehavior value in the registry to 2 from 3 (start with
Outlook). If you set that value in the registry to 0 it won't even show up
in the COM Add-Ins dialog.
Do this with Outlook shut down.
To set LoadBehavior type "regedit" in the Start, Run dialog, then press
Enter.
Navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins\iTunesAddIn.CalendarHelper.
In the right-hand pane select LoadBehavior and right-click on it and select
Modify. Set LoadBehavior to 0. OK the change and close the registry editor.
I usually start the iTunes software when I'm testing with it by plugging the
iPod into a USB port.

I'm not sure that I understand what this guy is saying.
I wasn't aware of this add-in until I saw this thread. It is indeed an add-in in
Outlook, but OL (2003) doesn't appear to be running abnormally.
What can I do with this add-in? My wife uses my PC for iTunes and her iPod
mainly because hers has problems seeing the iPod. Hardware issues, I think,
which we will resolve with a new PC.
If I uncheck the addin under the com addin menu will it stay unchecked?
Finally, what does "COM" stand for?

You can disable it and it will stay unchecked if you don't set the iTunes
software to synch your Outlook calendar. That's what the addin does.
COM stands for Component Object Model, a type of Windows programming.

What does it sync it with? As I don't use any Apple products I am not familiar
with this.

Even though there are no symantec folders on the pc when we installed
Outlook Symantec was in the COMS add-in..........

I've read the posts about the crashing, etc of Outlook 2007 when the iTunes Outlook addin is on. I have the same problem and it's making me crazy. I can't use Outlook because it is crashing immediately upon opening or after I try to read email. There are references in the prior posts about the software having been fixed. So far as I've been able to determine, Outlook hasn't been fixed. Is there a fixed iTunes Outlook addin?
I have an iPhone and the only way to sync it with Outlook is through iTunes. How am I suppose to sync my iPhone without the iTunes Outlook addin working? I'm very confused.
I really appreciate anyone's expertise in this solving this situation.

People who know about COM maybe can solve problems like this. Many people
with a pre installed box don't.

lists.
Plus an older version was not written correctly by the apple dev and when it
crashed other addins were blamed.

The add-in that causes the crash can be written to the event viewer, but
knowing exactly which one caused the crash is much harder. The current
problem is not that the add-in crashes outlook, but that it just doesn't
play as well as it should. It would be impossible to know beforehand which
ones are problematic - they can write KB's, but that is only after the
problem is identified, and by that time the vendor often has an update out.

I found this thread after searching with google.
I also have a problem with the plug in in my outlook 2003 with newest
itunes 7.x
I have to disable the com-add-in otherwise outlook won't close. But without
the plug-in the ipod calendar and contacts are not synced.
As far as i understand what Ken wrote the registry hack only changes the
way this add-in is loaded or not or even hidden and does not show up at
all.
Does anybody have an idea how to keep the itunes add-in enabled and close
outlook?
Just an idea (not tested): If i write two .reg files one with the
LoadBehavior 3 and one with the LoadBehavior 2. So if i have to close my
outlook i just click the .reg to disable the add-in. Would that work as
long as the plug-in itself is not working correctly?

Yes, itunes is the only one which causes outlook not to close.
Till now, i disabled the itunes plugin and only activate it when i need a
sync with the ipod.
I sometimes have to close outlook though the pc is running :)
