I am a new user. Can I access my Hotmail account through Outlook 5?
I keep getting the error message every time I open the mail.

I'm guessing you mean Outlook Express 5.0. OE and Outlook are different
products. To answer your question--yes, you can access Hotmail in OE5.

Post over to microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie5.outlookexpress for
more info.

If this group isn't carried on the news server that's carrying this group,
try using msnews.microsoft.com (MS's public news server that's the source
for all the microsoft.public newsgroups).

Hotmail is no longer pop3. It has been changed to be http based so Outlook
can NOT access Hotmail. Even with OE5, many people have problems accessing
Hotmail. If proxy servers are used, exclusions must be made. If your isp
uses transparent proxy servers - Hotmail cannot be accessed with OE5 unless
your isp is willing to adjust their settings - and even if they will agree -
the synchronization and moving hotmail inbox messages to other folders
doesn't always work.

Yahoo offers a free pop3 email that works with OE or with Outlook and
actually works all the time!! You can use it to send and receive email from
the Internet or from OE or from Outlook. You also get an online calendar,
to do tasks, and
address book that can sync with your desktop Outlook. You have access to
full details of your
desktop Outlook address book and calendar anywhere you can access the
Internet. When accessing thru OE or Outlook, you can leave messages on
yahoo server or not. Yahoo can also get your other pop3 email accounts and
can be forwarded.

Yahoo's portal and yahoo's messenger can notify you of any new mail
even if OE or Outlook is not open on your desktop. Their portal is very
easy to personalize and the yahoo companion adds a toolbar to your browser
to access often used sites like calendar, address book, etc with one click.
Log in once and you can switch back and forth between your email, calendar,
address book, etc without having to log in to each one. One sign out logs
you out of everything also.

I have been a hotmail user since it's inception, but am transferring
everything to yahoo because of it's ease of use and dependability. - Plus it
works the way I want to use it -- with Outlook - an integrated package with
calendar, to do, addresses, etc. Because of the email switch, I now use
Yahoo's portal instead of MSN's - which is also so much better and easier to
personalize.
