Hello dear all!
The problem, which U have seems to be rather small but I cannot find a way
to solve it. Our system has Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 and Outlook 2000
as client's software. I am an Outlook 2000 user and I create a lot of
different rules for incoming and outcoming messages, which are forwarded to
various people, copied to folders, etc. I do use local .pst file for storage
of my messages.
Recently when I try to creat a new rule and update the list, Outlook informs
me that "There is not enough space on the Microsoft Exchange to store all of
your rules. The rules that failed to upload have been disabled". I have only
16 rules, 12 of which are "client-only" (what is the difference?). Having
spoken to our exchange Admin, I couldn't find a solution as he (Admin)
doesn't see any limitation to my account at Exchange.
May someone help me in this question? Your kind assistance is much
appreciated :)
Many thanks,
E.

Rule are governed by size rather than number. Look for a file with a *.rwz
extension, the maximum size is 32 k. Once this is reached Rules will start
to run erratically, not at all or give you error messages. One workaround
is if your using distribution lists, take the names from the GAL instead of
a PAB or contacts PDL.

There is a limit for rules. They can not take up more then 32KB. It has
nothing to do with the amount of space left on the Exchange Server or the
mailbox limitations on your particular mailbox.

Dear Robert (and Patricia),
Many thanks for your reply. I checked for .rwz files and found two of them
at my computer: Microsoft Outlook.rwz (3.38 KB size) and MS Exchange
Settings.rwz (8.02 KB).
Both are far away from the limit -32 Kb. What it may be?
My version:
1).rwz file at Exchange server computer?
2) Broken rules file at my computer ?
3) Some allien influence? :)

Many thanks for your help -you are great!
E.L.

Are any of your rules using Personal Distribution Lists.

Going back to your first post i.e. the difference between server side and
client side rules the difference is
Rules either run on the server or the client. Rules that run on the server
are in effect even when you are not running Outlook (the client). Rules
marked in the Rules Wizard as "(client-only)" may only work when you are
running Outlook. If a rule requires access to your personal folders, it is a
client-only rule, since your personal folders (.pst) file is located on your
client computer. Rules that present you with a message are also client-side
rules. If the rule only depends on mailbox folders, located on the server,
then it is a server-side rule and can run as long as the mail server is
running.

This is not necessarily true.

The 32K limit that you speak of *IS* correct. However, it has nothing to do
with the size of the RWZ file. The 32K limit is actually the maximum size
of the packet that is sent between Outlook and the Exchange Server. All of
the rules must fit inside this one packet. If not, you will receive the
message that you cannot add any more rules.

The above, of course, is only relevant if the user(s) are using a Exchange
Server, with the delivery point set to their mailbox. If the delivery point
is a PST, or if they do not have Exchange, then the sky is the limit on
rules. I have seen RWZ files 500K that work just fine.

With all of this
