Could someone please help me out with the correct settings? I've got my
Gmail account pushing effectively to my Windows Mobile smartphone, but I
can't seem to get it working properly on my Outlook 2007 installation.

I've got it sending/receiving via the pop settings but I'd love it if my
inboxes on my smartphone and laptop were properly in sync...

Thanks

Gmail doesn't push to outlook. Outlook goes to gmail and collects the mail.
The phone and desktop should be within 5 minutes of 'sync' - outlook should
not be set to collect mail any more frequently than 5 - 8 minutes.

Ah fair play. I guess the question I'm asking is how to make it so that when
I'm out and read mail on my Smartphone, then switch my laptop on later and
pull mail down, those mails I've read on my smartphone are already marked as
read in Outlook on my laptop?

The only way to do that AFAIK is to set GMail up as IMAP on your laptop.

This really isn't true.

Gmail supports IMAP IDLE, which allows the server to push notifications
to connected clients without the client constantly polling.

However, Google doesn't push all changes via IDLE, only new messages, so
in practice you still need to poll to get updated folder views if you
use more than one mail client on a regular basis.

The above having been said, Outlook's IMAP IDLE support isn't fantastic,
Outlook doesn't always notice and reestablish the connection in the
event of a timeout, so it's not quite as good an experience as other
IMAP IDLE capable clients.

You'll need to use IMAP, not POP3.

POP doesn't support idle and the OP said he was using POP. Switching to
IMAP will give the results he wants (mail he's read on the phone or web is
marked read), regardless of Outlook's support of IDLE.

Thanks Diane

Ok, looks like this properly became an Outlook question :D When I configure
with the IMAP settings given for Gmail, Outlook sets things up with a new
pst file. It's not a massive deal, but is it possible to make it work with
the original pst file, or replace it, etc. etc.?

No, you cant use the old pst. It's how imap works - it keeps copies of the
messages in outlook and it needs to make its own pst.

How about making the IMAP pst the default? Or is that a no-no?

That's a no-no too, since it does not support the special folders -
calendar, contacts, tasks. You can set outlook to open to the imap inbox
and you can move it.

Setting the start up folder -
