manoj,
Notmail won't allow you to actually "close" an account.
They are interested only in keeping up (by whatever means necessary) their "metrix", so the account will stay on the roles and be counted regardless of your desires, for 6 months or so.
On your end, all you can do is not use it and eventually (maybe 6 months from now) it will "go away"..
Best bet (IMO) would be to dump them both and head off to www.yahoo.com or one of the others.

Manoj,

You've read Val's editorial hogwash, now here is the answer to your question...

Currently, if you do not sign in to your Hotmail account for 60 days, or if you do not sign-in within the first 10 days, your account will be marked "inactive." Stored e-mail and addresses will be deleted, and inbound mail will be refused. Your Passport will still function, and your Hotmail e-mail name will be reserved. To re-activate your account, simply go to http://www.hotmail.com and enter your Sign-In name and password. You will then be able to once again send and receive e-mail using hotmail. If your account stays "inactive" for over a period of 90 days, it may be permanently deleted.

Simply put, don't access the account you wish to close and Hotmail will cancel it for you after 90 days.

Where was the misinformation? Val said that don't use it for 6 months, and
it may go away. That's what you said.

Guess which one is factual....

Val: On your end, all you can do is not use it and eventually (**maybe 6
months from now**) it will "go away"..

MikeP: If your account stays "inactive" for over a period of 90 days, it
may be permanently deleted.

From Hotmail's website...

What does it mean when my account is marked "inactive"?

Currently, if you do not sign in to your Hotmail account for 60 days, or if

One shouldn't believe everything they read nor is it accurate to lead others to do the same..
    - "inactive" for over a period of 90 days, it may be permanently
deleted.

In Oct 2000, I created a hotmail account for newsletter delivery .in Dec 2000 all newsletters moved to a new Yahoo account mostly due to the overwhelming spam consistent with Hotmail...the original newsletter hot mail account has not been used since Jan 2, 2001

At 7:53 pm today, 6 months, 15 days later...the account allowed logon without fail post a passport request..

Seems like everyone is wrong..and Val's response is much closer to the truth than those posting the proverbial 'cut and paste it says it right here' response.

Seems "guessing" is not required.

We now *know* which one is factual, as a result of the posting of an
individual that most, if not all who frequent these parts, respect highly.
I'll not waste any time waiting for an apology from the "shills" (those with
the "titles" that they (mis)use when they launch into 'shill' mode.

Nor will I waste the time for the "wannabee" shill that elected to invoke
the personal attack mode in his/her initial reply. Hey, a wannabee shill is
on a mission....hope it works out for you but (as an aside) you really are
going to have to hone your flame skills if you have any hopes of joining the
annointed.

bkmvp could probably be of assistance there, probably best if you contact
him/her by personal email.

So, shmvp, inquiring minds want to know....?

It's now over two hours later (two hours would be two hours, AUS or US,
would it not?), and, you've replied to other posts in the interim, so.....
why is it you've not replied to Winston's post in this thread?
I'd expect that a paralegal would have a better understanding of the
negotiation process as it relates to discussions. Hiding one's head in the
sand when the other party makes a valid point, isn't usually a good
decision.
But then again, training your minions (either by private email, or by
example) in the ...."whatever"...... technique (one that minion bkmvp seems
to have learned perfectly), does seem to reinforce your 'scarlet o'hara'
leanings.

Long as it's all out in the open - it's fine with me.
Long as your cub scout troop of wannabee shills keep pointing out the folly
of your (not "your" personally, "your" as in your band of shills) ways, for
all to see, it's a good day for honesty for the rest of the NG observers.

Its quite simple dear troublemaker. I didn't see it. I filtered the posts
on the other system to only accept those made after 8am my time which is
when I left this location - Winston's post missed out by 1 minute.

Has this passport account you refer to been used at any time during the last
6 months, 15 days and when was the last time it was used?

Logging onto Passport is considered accessing for Hotmail access purposes.

Since you bring up the matter of hiding one's head in the sand, I refer you
to the thread "major upgrades" where I asked you:

" Do you ever actually read what you post, or do you just skim the shill

Hey Val,

Where did you find the 'msft press release' you mention?

Its not here:
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/newsroom/msn/default.asp

I can't find it here under 16 or 17 July general page either
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/todaynews.asp

Or here:
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/default.asp

I look forward to your response.

Barry,

Is there a reason that you stoop to name calling or "titling" people? It's
uncalled for, and could be considered a violation of the Rules of Conduct
for this group. Would you like that I post the newsgroup rules as a
reminder?

I would trust the information given from the owners of the service before I
would trust information given out by Barry. Barry just likes to carry on
like a school girl/boy and purposely inject a negative campaign into
everything they see, read or smell. Secondly, the correct "white paper", or
"legal" information relating to the closing of the Hotmail account is
located at the Hotmail site which is posted by Sandi.

Here nor there, the information is irrelevant. What would be the need to
close an account? Just don't use it.

(BTW, I have had 2 accounts close after almost 4 months of no use.)

Which one is factual? Like I said, both say the same thing in the context
of the original question, which was "how do I close a hotmail account?"

It has nothing to do with active, inactive, 60 days or 90 days.

The bottom line is that YOU CAN'T CLOSE A HOTMAIL ACCOUNT!

Sort of true, and believable for those who deal in "msn speak"

Just for future reference, you will soon (sometime this year) be able to delete an account yourself.

May or may not be true, since we have nothing more reliable to go on than bkmvps proclamation of 'paul' as a 'guru' it's suspect at best.
The ability to delete an account "soon.....sometime this year", really is pretty funny and must be an embarrasing admition for a shill.
Since we can go on the reliability of the 'guru's' past predictions coming true, 'suspect' is generous.

What we do know is, shills will be shills and there is no shortage of smoke being blown up each of their......by each other.

Eh.

Not sure how that is funny.  You go so far to blow holes in everything anyone says that disagrees with your view you loose sight of how things work in the real world.  Products don't suddenly grow on trees with every single feature you possibly need.  They mature, evolve and expand over time as programmers work.  There is no shame, or embarrasment associated whatsoever on explaining that various features are not available today, but will be in the future.  Software and services are flexible.
