Outlook constantly sending message 1 of 5

I recently did a clean install of Office 2003, and i'm getting an
interesting problem with outlook.

Although there are no visible emails in my outbox folder, outlook still says
"sending message 1 of 5" in the status bar, and it doesn't go away.

When i send email the messages go through, but i still get that msg.

This has been going on ever since the first day that i ran outlook.

Has anyone had the same problem and knows how to fix it? This problem is
more annoying than anything else. Thanks in advance.

Can you turn on diagnostic logging (see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q300479, it works
for Outlook 2003 as well) and post the OPMLog.log file when you get this
message?

Are you using the beta version of Outlook 2003, or the released version?
What's happening is that Outlook is attempting to send a read-receipt, but
the smtp.varig.com server is configured to reject a message with a null MAIL
FROM address ("<>"), which is the address required by Internet standards for
both delivery- and read-receipts. The beta version of Outlook generated
such receipts strictly in accordance with Internet standards, but enough
people encountered the problem you're seeing (mail servers configured to
*violate* Internet standards) that in the released version we first try to
send according to Internet standards, but if that fails we fall back to
using the email address of the account in hopes that the server will accept
that.

So if you've got the beta, getting the released version should fix your
problem. I'd also complain to whoever maintains smtp.varig.com about the
way the server is configured - it violates the Internet mail standards.
Since the logs show that you have a yahoo account as well, a workaround
would be to configure the outgoing server for your varig.com account to
point to yahoo instead, send the mail (which I presume yahoo will accept),
and then change your account back to smtp.varig.com.
