Sometimes my Outlook 2016 shows its e-mail reading pane and sometimes not?

Hello.
I noticed my updated Office for Mac 2016's Outlook v15.17 doesn't always
show the reading pane section in e-mails. Why is that? I tried toggling
the reading pane options, and they looked correct. What's the deal? :(
