I have a *.pst file which has a size of 2.1 gigabytes. My Outlook 2000 is
giving me an error that I would have to use the repair kit in order to fix
the file. When I do that at stage 7 I get an error that the process could
finish sice the program encountered an error. I downoladed the SR-1a update
and I still encounter that problem. My operating system is Nt 4.0. What
should I do. I need to recover this file. Are there any 3rd party programs
that can fix this issue?

2gb is the size limit for PST files. You can use a hex editor to excise a
portion of the file so that Scanpst can recover the rest. See
http://www.slipstick.com/problems/repair2gbpst.htm.

Exit outlook
Find your pst using windows explorer and rename it, but leave the extension
.pst
Then restart outlook and you will be prompted to open a pst file. Simply
fill in a file name that does not exist yet, and click open. A new file will
be created.
Now in the file-menu click import/export and import your old pst.

Importing is much more effective than using scanpst. If importing your pst
does not work you can forget about recovering it.

Good luck!

If the PST is over the 2gb limit, it can't be imported. The solution here is
to use a hex editor to take out enough of the PST to get it below the limit,
then run Scanpst to repair the damage caused by cutting out some data. See
http://www.slipstick.com/problems/repair2gbpst.htm.

What about opening a new empty pst-file simultaneously with the full one, then dragging folders or individual groups of items from the full to the new pst file to recover what is really desired, then delete the maxed out file when done? If he can open the full file in OL, he ought to be able to drag items out of it.

But you won't be able to open the PST if it's over 2gb.

We were able using a hex editor to delete data but after we deleted it and
we reapired it and then open it we couldn't see anything. There were a
couple thousand of empty e-mails in the recovered inbox. I cecked the
properties of the recovered folder and even though the size of my pst is
almost 2 gb the properties said that it is only 315K...

It's probably worth trying to alternate scandisk.exe and scanpst.exe a few
times to see if that recovers more data. Also, you might want to excise data
from a different spot in the big file with your hex editor to see if that
makes a difference.
