I can manage to set up a profile successfully in Outlook 2001, which seems
to imply that the program and the exchange server are talking to each other;
but every time I try to log in I get the message 'Your Microsoft Exchange
Server is unavailable'. I have tried creating a hosts file, and every other
work around that I could trace in this discussion list, including using
ResEdit to alter the Exchange Preferences. But all to no avail. Any other
suggestions?

Try adding the IP of the exchange server in the search domains of the
TCP/IP settings in the control panel.
