Transferring Office to a new laptop

I have the job of setting up a new laptop and transferring files across
from the old one.

The old laptop has Office Professional Plus 2010 installed, but Outlook
repeatedly throws errors and/or hangs. I've run scanpst.exe several
times but the owner tells me the errors keep coming back.

Is there a way to avoid polluting a fresh install of Office on the new
laptop if/when I transfer the old data file across? Keeping the old
emails and appointments is pretty much essential.
