Recently my replies and new messages in Outlook suddenly began showing format
codes (e.g., the paragraph icon for line returns, a dot between all words).
I must have inadvertantly hit a command but I cannot figure out how to undo
this and get back to the normal view. When I send the message, the codes are
not visible to the receiver. This is very annoying and I'd be grateful for
help here!

Click on the paragraph symbol on the toolbar to toggle between show and hide.
OR stop using Word as editor. More:

There is no paragraph symbol on the toolbar and the URL didn't help in that
regard. Deselecting Word as editor does eliminate the problem (but changes
the look of my messages), but I have Word as editor on my laptop and this
problem doesn't occur there. I'm still not able to get back to the original
state on my desktop. I remain puzzled....

Well, then, in the new message window, click Tools>Options and, on the View
tab, uncheck the boxes under the "Formatting marks" section.
