You'll have to ask Road Runner as to whether they permit multiple
mailboxes on a single account. Many do but the owner of the account is
the administrator and needs to create "member" or "associate" accounts
so they get their own mailboxes. The username portion of the e-mail
address is the same as your account name. If Road Runner only gives out
one mailbox per account then that is all you get and it has the username
of the account in the e-mail address. If Road Runner allows more than
one mailbox per account, talk to your roommate since she is the owner of
that account and the one that can create more mailboxes under her
account.

You can put whatever string you want in the E-mail field of your e-mail
client since it never has to match the e-mail address of the mail server
through which you send your outbound mails. However, if you don't
actually have a mailbox with that username then no one can send any
e-mails to that address (and how spammers use bogus e-mail addresses).
You actually need your own mailbox that matches on the username in the
e-mail address to get mails delivered to it so you can retrieve them.

Road Runner should know all about what features are available on the
particular account type that your roommate is paying for. Why not call
them? They will probably talk to you although you are not the owner of
the account if you give them enough info about the owner so they feel
comfortable talking to you, but it will probably still come down to the
owner of the account has to add the additional mailboxes. What did your
roommate say when you asked her to add another mailbox to her account
with a username that you like for yourself?

Many times you can find the help you want (if you are too timid to call
the provider) on their web site. With a bit of digging through Road
Runner's e-mail FAQ, I found:

"Each Road Runner account can have up to 10 accounts."

So have your roommate create another mailbox under her account that you
can use.

The cable company must make sure you have your own mail address and mailbox
or you and your rommate will share the same mail.
