My e-mail accounts are on AOL and I supposed that would be my "exchange
server" but Outlook tells me it cannot access the exchange server even when I
am online. This is my first attempt to use Outlook as I am taking an online
class in it.

Exchange is a mail server product for business & such. See if the info here
