I can't get the New Mail Notification sound to play when I get mail. All I
get it the PC speaker beep.

I have Windows2000 Pro and Outlook 2000.
I've read through the Help, Outlook newsgroups, Google groups, Microsoft KB.
"Play a sound" is checked in Advanced E-Mail Options.
I have changed the setting for "New Mail Notification" in the "Sounds and
Multimedia" applet in the Control Panel. I've made sure the sound file
exists.
I've copied notify.wav to C:/ and pointed to it in the Control Panel.
I've modified the registry setting as described in Microsoft KB article
Q246643.
I've restarted Outlook. I've restarted my PC.
Nothing I've tried fixes this.

Any ideas?

Mark

When you go to Control Panel | Sounds in Windows 2000 and locate the "New
Mail Notification" can you click the "Preview" arrow button, and if so does
it sound right?

Odd. Have you already tried going to Help (in Outlook) and choosing Detect
and Repair? Worth a shot.

I hadn't tried "Detect & Repair". I just now ran it. No go. I still get just
the PC speaker beep.

Odd indeed.

The only other thing I could suggest is...try a different sound.

I tried changing it to ringin.wav (sounds like a phone ringing). I still get
just a beep.

If it makes any difference, I had used Outlook Express for a long time on
this machine before starting to use Outlook about a month ago. But as I
recall, I WAS getting the correct "new mail notification" sound for a while
with Outlook, then it stopped working.

That's truly strange. SWAG: Go to Internet Explorer | Tools | Internet
Options | Programs and make sure that Microsoft Outlook is set to be the
default mail program.

Well...I'm stumped. Do you have a sledgehammer? <grin>

Do your other system sounds work normally? Starting Windows, etc.?

Last gasp...check this article and see if the registry entry it refers to
is correct: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q190304

O.k., here's a couple of other thoughts (courtesy of Microsoft):

1. You're not running it in a Terminal Server environment I assume?

2. Try starting RedEdit (good idea to have a known-good backup of your
system first). Highlight the HKEY_CURRENT_USER key. There should only be
the (Default) key there. If there are any other keys, delete them.
Right-click the Default value and select "Modify". If there is a value,
delete it, then close RegEdit and see if the sound works now.

If there was no value in the Default value when you opened it, set a value
(doesn't matter what it is). Then close Regedit. Reopen Regedit, go back
to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Default key and delete the value you just created.
Close Regedit and see if the sound works.

Worth a shot. :)

In the words of Victor Meldrew, "I DON'T BELIEEEEVE IT!!" (maybe for UK TV addicts ;o)

Well this fixed it for me.

For ages now my Outlook 2007 (on XP SP3) refused to use the configured .wav in the control panel Sounds and Audio devices, instead it would only use the system 'BEEP'.

After much searching and even rebuilding my computer, it remained, which meant that the problem was either on the exchange server (highly unlikely) or my roaming profile (I hate roaming profiles but our admins won't let me opt out Grrrr).

I was going to blast away my roaming profile (sledgehammer to crack, I know) but I tripped over this post. It turned out during previous script testing I was doing to write registry control functions, I had also tested feeding the script a hive only and no key. This resulted in the 'Default' value being edited for the root of the HKCU hive.

Simply 'deleting' the Default value worked immediately. (Although you don't delete the value per say, you are just blanking it).

I do think though that it is completely illogical that the default value under the HKCU hive can cause this problem ....

So: Thanks!

Daz.
