Have you configured your account to authenticate itself to the SMTP server?
Tools-> E-mail Accounts-> Next-> Change-> More Settings-> tab Outgoing
Server

Adelphia.net says not to do that. I have been using outlook with my adelphia
mail for quite some time with no troubles. The last week or so I've
downloaded several anti-virus programs trying to get rid of "generic
downloader.h" virus. and I'm thinking this has something to do with my
problem. I just can't seem to lick this. I've shut off my firewall,
anti-virus...all of it and nothing seems to work.

HELP!! :)

I think the culprit is indeed the virus scanner but shutting down the virus
scanner doesn't do the trick. You'll have to disable the integration of the
virus scanner with Outlook. Usually this can be done from within the
configuration of the virus scanner itself (see the documentation for that).
In some cases you can force it by disabling the add-in that registers it
with Outlook; Tools-> Options-> tab Other-> button Advanced Options-> button
COM Add-Ins/Add-In Manager and then restart Outlook (make sure the
outlook.exe process actually quits before starting Outlook again).
