When I choose a set of Outlook 2007 messages and drag them to a folder in
Windows Explorer, it saves each message as an MSG file. I use Funduc Search
and Replace to look for text in files, and it can find parts of the email
address and other header information, but it cannot find text in the body of
the messages. When I viewed a message file in Notepad, it appears there's a
space between every character in the body of the message. Are MSG files saved
as Unicode? Is there a way to set Outlook to save them automatically in a
format that would be searchable? I don't want to have to save each message
one at a time.

Thanks!

Yes, no. MSG files are not readable by other applications. Why not save
them in a format you can use without outlook? HTML, text, or PDF are all
doable. See http://www.slipstick.com/addins/housekeeping.asp for utilities
that can export in other formats.
