Hi:

I'm looking for help with Outlook 2003 and Comcast e-mail.

I have been using Comcast e-mail through Outlook 2003 for several years. As
of a few days ago, I cannot send e-mail through my Comcast account using
Outlook. I can receive messages with no problems.

I have reviewed the setting and ports. I have checked My Outgoing Server
(SMTP) Requires Authentication and am using the same info as my incoming mail
server. I am using ports 110 and 587. I am not requiring SSL.

I have not made any configuration changes to my PC.

My virus software (AVG Free) is not scanning e-mails.

I am running WinXP Pro SP2 (cannot install SP3 as it crashes the PC and I
have to revert back to the previous state).

I CAN send a test messge through the configuration tab but cannot send
regular e-mails. I can also send e-mails from Outlook using my other
non-Comcast accounts. I can also send e-mail using Concast's web interface.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

John

So what does "cannot send" mean? How do you know that you cannot send
(so we know, too)?

Did you specify the mail host names that Comcast told you to use, or did
you specify some region-specific mail hosts? Using their front-end
server lets them figure out which server to use in your area to provide
load-balancing across the nation.

Have you tried other e-mail service providers, like Gmail with its
POP/IMAP access methods? Can you do web surfing?

You could call Comcast but recently their service response sucks. After
40 minutes on hold, I quit waiting. Alas, with a full outage here
yesterday, I couldn't even use their tech chat interface.

Hi:

Thanks for your reply.

When I click send/receiver, Outlook tries to send and fails withn the
following error:

Task pop.comcast.net - Sending reported error (0x8004210b). The operation
timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP) server. If you
continue receiving this message, contact your server admin or your ISP.

When I Google that error, I find a referecne on the Microsoft support site
relating to a problem with Microsoft Exchange server. I'm not running
Exchange.

I am using pop.comcast.net and pop.comcast.net. I can surf the web.

Thanks

This is your problem. You didn't follow Comcast's instructions. The outgoing
mail server it smtp.comcast.net, not pop.comcast.net. See

Proper mail hostnames for Comcast are:

POP: mail.comcast.net (port 110)
SMTP: smtp.comcast.net (port 587)

"I have not made any configuration changes to my PC."

Since this is a recent problem and you were functioning before, it
certainly appears that there was a change in the account defined in
Outlook (that the host names got screwed up). If you didn't make the
change, who else gets to share your computer? Their SMTP server has
never had "pop" in its hostname.

Yours is NOT the same problem.

Outlook 2003 working fine with Comcast for years. No overt changes to the software (of which I am aware.)

As of several days ago, incoming emails are not coming into the account. I can send from the account and outgoing emails go thru to my work, hotmail and gmail accounts.

Contacted Comcast, they walked thru their spiel...still nothing.

Incoming: mail.comcast.net 110
Outgoing: smtp.comcast.net 587 (was 25 but changed at the Comcast reps advise.)

Test of account settings comes back as all fine.

It's a year since the last post. Has anyone come up with a fix so that we can use Outlook 2003 with a Comcast email account? And, please don't send a Comcast web site address in that it is intercepted at Comcast and you only get their general Q&A home page.

Have you looked in IE's internet options under Content--> Certificates.

I recently setup my wife's new laptop and Outlook wouldn't work until I
found a posting about the certificates being tied to Outlook and sure
enough she has two of them, which I deleted and then Outlook started
working.

Good luck,

Jim
