When I try to set up my hotmail email account with outlook 2007 I continue to
have problems it will give me the message that I have to set up an account
with msn but I already have an existing account so I don't know why this
continues to happen, I tried this quite a few times and continue to have the
same problem. I deleted the email address and entered it as a new account to
see if it would work but I still get the same message.

Are you using the Outlook Connector?

So is it a *paid* account? Freebie accounts require you use their
webmail interface.

Not if they use the Outlook Connector, which has only recently been offered
as a free add-in for using free Hotmail/Windows Live Mail accounts in Outlook
2003 and 2007.

That has not proven out for me. I have 2 Hotmail accounts:

- One is a many-year old account that got grandfathered on Nov 2004
when Microsoft dropped WebDAV access for freebie accounts created
after that date. However, I switched to their Hotmail Live interface
and forgot to switch it back to the classic MSN interface. The link
to switch back disappeared so now I can't go back to the classic
interface. A month, or so, after that, I could no longer connect
using WebDAV.

- One is a newer account opened a few months ago.

Neither of those accounts will let me connect using WebDAV in Outlook
or Outlook Express. I downloaded and installed Outlook Connector but
still got the error message in Outlook which says that access is no
longer permitted for free accounts. So the Outlook Connector add-on
did not get around that both my accounts are freebie Hotmail accounts.
Both accounts are still active and I can use the webmail interface to
use them. I just can't use WebDAV or Outlook Connector to use them.

Which version of the Outlook Connector did you download?
Currently 12.0.4518.1058 is the latest.

Can't tell since I uninstalled it when it proved that it wouldn't
connect (and spewed back the same error message that I cannot to a
free account). That test was performed on or about August 25, so the
test used whatever version of Outlook Connector that was available for
download at that time.

Peculiarly, I *can* connect to my Hotmail accounts if I use Windows
Live Mail. There are still too many defects with WLM so I uninstalled
that, too. So it appears that some access to my free accounts is
possible but not by using the included WebDAV support in Outlook or
Outlook Express or by using the Outlook Connector. So connection is
possible for a freebie account but, so far, only if I use WLM.

You might want to give it another shot as your statement that it is only for
WLM is not true. However, the WebDAV can indeed determine which client is
being used to access the account and can then allow or refuse the
connection.

Just a few days ago version 4 of the Outlook Connector was released;
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=7aad7e6a-931e-438a-950c-5e9ea66322d4

I assume you have this update installed already?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/904942/

If you still can only connect via WLM, there must be something wrong with
your account and you should contact Microsoft.

(on a side note; the latest version of WLM fixes many bugs and adds some new
features)

Downloaded the Outlook Connector available as of today and installed
it. That newest version lets me receive and send e-mails through my
Hotmail account. Thanks.

Well, it looked like it was going to work. It worked once to receive
and then once to send. Afterward, I receive a new e-mail, it is
sitting in my webmail's Inbox, but Outlook Connector won't fetch it.
In the Outlook Connector toolbar (shown above the bottom status bar by
default), the Server Status detailed report says:

Outlook Connector Version 12.0.4518.1063

Account: <myusername>@hotmail.com

Signed in successfully at 09/13/2007 9:45:34 PM

Mail: Last successfully refreshed at 9:45 PM.
Calendar: Error at 9:45 PM.
Contacts: Last successfully refreshed at 9:45 PM.

Errors :

Time: 09/13/2007 9:45:36 PM
Error in Calendar
Outlook Connector is available only to subscribers.

When I go to www.hotmail.com, I don't have to login because the
Outlook Connector is still logged in. The login was successful for
Outlook Connector. It just won't retrieve e-mails that I can see in
the Inbox when using Outlook Connector.

Interesting. Do you by any chance have a virus scanner that integrates with
Outlook? If it acts like a mail proxy, your mail client will be recognized
as being your virus scanner instead of Outlook and the WebDAV will reject
you.

Yes, have an anti-virus program: AVG. It has e-mail scanning but it
is a transparent proxy that works only for ports 25 and 110. It does
not install an Outlook add-in. If I use SSL then it won't intercept
e-mails on those other ports. Presumably HTTP accounts are over port
80 and most anti-virus scanners will interrogate that traffic (and
disabling e-mail scanning in the AV program won't affects its
interrogation of HTTP traffic). Besides, the "Outlook Connector is
available only to subscribers" error message seems clear as to why
that setup won't work.
