You changed it by changing the window background color in Windows perhaps?

Hi Art,

I believe the reading pane background color setting you're looking for is
located in Internet Explorer's settings. It took me a long time to find it
myself since I was expecting (perhaps unreasonably) to find the setting in
Outlook.

In Internet Explorer:
+ Go to Tools -> Internet Options
+ Under the General tab click on Colors
+ Make sure "Use Windows Colors" is unchecked
+ Select the color you would like under Background
