My Outlook is setup to automatically send and receive every 10 minutes, and it does that just fine. The problem is that the send/receive button on the toolbar gives a "this operation failed" error message. It's driving me crazy! My Symantec firewall is set to allow send/receive from Outlook, so that doesn't appear to be the problem. Any ideas?

I'm having a similar issue with Outlook XP. The send/receive works at launch and every 5 minutes, but won't work when I manually hit the button, but I'm not gettting any error messages. I think it may be a registry issue, because I cleaned out some keys, but I don't know how to get it to repair/restore itself.

I have the same problem with Outlook 2007. It started about 2 wks ago. I had added another account to Outlook just before the Office updates came down from Windows Update and then started having the no manual Send/Receive issue. Automatic works just fine. No error messages or anything else. One account is with q.com and the other is msn.com. Both are listed as MAPI.

I followed the instructions to rebuild my profile that you'll see as a response to many of these cases and it solved the problem. Link to instructions is below.
