where are the emails of my sent items?

Hello,

We have Windows 2000 SBS installed with an Exchange Server for email. Over
the past week I have had some folders in Outlook on the clients machines hide
the contents. i.e the Sent Items folder says that there are 3000 messages
but none are shown. Where have they gone? And why?
